My first quote floored me, which was $8600 by Mr. D’s. My second quote attempt, Biggz, won’t do it citing they don’t have the necessary equipment. I suspect they just didn’t want any part of it because of the difficulty. I have a list of 31 different BR area tree removal services and I’m prepared to get quotes from every one of them because the thought of paying $8600 makes me want to throw up. I’d love to hear some recommendations.

The tree is in a tough spot. The only way to get to it is through my neighbor’s yard, in which there’s a fence to go through and low power lines coming off the main line to my neighbors house right where they would have to work. Any advice is appreciated.

FYI, it’s a large Red Oak.

You won't like to hear this, but Mr. D's is a pretty respectable service and that quote probably isn't ridiculous.

If it's a really large tree near a house and in a tight spot, he's probably going to need to bring out a crane or some highly specialized heavy equipment.

The job will likely take all day and just paying a crane operator is expensive all by itself.

I'd consider calling your insurance company. Maybe they can help with this. (Even if it's just for documentation purposes. You're trying to protect your property I assume.)

They tore my yard up, when the job could have been done in a less intrusive way. I would not use them again.

Pay them the $8,600. Doesn't really sound all that bad, what with the tree being in a tough spot, power lines and neighbor's yard.

By large... how large? How tall? How big around?

Wait until Jan then get estimates. Tree services are in higher demand during hurricane season when many people are worried about trees near the house. The services are hungrier in the winter especially if they have equipment sitting idle.

Louisiana Tree Service. Scott is knowledgeable, and good. He’s on the high side but does good work.
That price sounds high on its face for a single tree, but sounds like there’s way more to it than just cutting down a tree. If they have to go through the neighbors yard, cut down a fence, etc, they will have a lot of costs in repairing/mitigating everything they did just to get to your yard. Still have to remove or stack the debris from the tree too.

Second Louisiana Tree Service. They've done a lot of work for me. Very professional. Can't comment on cost effectiveness.

If you were running around Southdowns in the past few days, you saw Jamie Robins of LIV Properties chopping down a massive water oak that was very much directly over two houses, as well as doing high-level trim and cut work in the back yard of another neighbor.

All parties were satisfied.

I needed to have a few trees cut down and got three quotes. Mr. D's was the cheapest of the three. I know how you feel, I was surprised by the quotes.

They just cut down two of my trees. They were much more reasonable than the first quote I got.

Pelican took care of my trees and were the lowest quote. No complaint, they got in and got it done with no BS. A few normal ruts in the yard, but that cannot be helped. He had Todd's Stump Grinding come in and grind the stumps once the trees were cut. I would highly recommend getting a quote from them.

Louisiana Tree Service was taken over by respected arborist Scot Courtright a few years ago. They are well trained, safety minded and well equipped. They are not the cheapest. If you want safe and healthy trees to be a centerpiece of your landscape, they are the people to talk to. I had them climb, cut and crane out two dangerous trees for me.

I used them before Scott took ivermectin from the previous owner who died and used them again this year with Scott. They do good work and have given me good advice.

Not cheap, but they do have good equipment and a bucket lift that can reach 75 feet I think and fit through a 3-ft gate. That may not be good enough to bring down your tree though.

Whatever you do, don't even call Kelvin Robins and/or Jay Starr Tree Services.

ETA: Oh! He was charged in connection with a deadly shooting. Things just keep getting unimaginably worse for him.

Mr. D’s is great. Also had a good experience with Creels

Offer cash, some will give you a solid discount.

ETA. Wait until late winter when the leaves have dropped. May be able to save some money when they’re slow and it’s easier to cut

I would call several. Ten Harbourt who owned Marathon tree service in Baton Rouge cut down branches that others wanted thousands for $500. You gotta find someone with an approach that isn’t so invasive due to lack of skill. Not sure if Ted is still around. He was old back then, 10+ years ago.
