When Westminster Oaks residents got word that a Leon County road crew had arrived Wednesday evening to undo their colored crosswalk, phones started ringing.

“People just started calling people and they got in their golf carts and we got out there as quick as we can,” said Sally Butzin, a resident of one of the largest senior living communities in Tallahassee.

At about 6:30 p.m., as the crew worked to scrape away the paint, some 30 people began to gather. Some ran to the scene. Some came in walkers. They began chanting “save our crosswalks.”

One resident even lay down across the green and yellow geometric patterned crosswalk on Dempsey Mayo Road to prevent the crew from continuing to erase a project that residents embraced.

They were proud of their partnership with the students at nearby W.T. Moore Elementary School – a project that was funded by Knight Creative Communities Institute.

It was once supported by the county before they were ordered to eradicate road art – under threat of state funding cuts – by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration because state roads were being “commandeered for political purposes.”

While the Florida Department of Transportation took a less political tact and said the agency has a duty “to ensure the safety and consistency of public roadways and transportation systems,” Westminster residents say that’s exactly what the colored crosswalks provided. It was a sign drivers should slow down and was a kind of safe passage for older residents crossing from one side of the senior living campus to another.

“We were all fussing about it, and I was sitting here this evening when a neighbor said ‘Hurry up! Come on! They are out there trying to remove the colors,' " she said.

When she arrived, the 85-year-old realized something was missing.

“What do you do when you protest? You lie down in the middle of the street. So I went over there and I lied down in the middle of the street,” she said.

“I’m sure others would have joined me but some of them may not have been able to get back up,” she quipped.
