Apple TV 4K - wait for new one?

there are no real differences in AppleTV 4k. Get a gen 2 or later if you want one.

He means the new one next month isn’t going to be appreciably different.

The biggest change in the apple TV 4k models was that the 1st gen is limited to 30hz at 4k where as the 2nd gen and later can do 60Hz at 4k. That would be the only reason I'd say to stick with 2nd gen or newer.

There is also a minor SDR PQ difference between 2nd gen and 3rd gen due some techno mumbo jumbo minutia but for the average user it is nothing to even think about as it isn't likely noticeable.

I like Roku ultra as much as Apple TV. Rest of Roku, not so much. Roku streaming sticks would be ok if they had some heat dissipation but their tiny size and placement behind TVs isn’t a good combination.

The joke is that the ATV is wildly overpowered for most uses now anyway, so people question what a refreshed one can offer (perhaps physical updates/remote updates).

So in that sense, I think the only reason to wait would be to get better pricing on older models. I upgrade with Apple's cycle frequently, I have no interest in updating my Apple TVs unless there are some useful remote upgrades or something.

One plus of the apple tv is that the ESPN app allows multiview. I think, not certain, that it's still the only one that lets you do that. I have a very old apple tv and it'll have trouble when I have 4 games on multiview. I have looked into getting a new one, but saw that its looks like a new model is coming later this year and will wait and see how much it is.

There's speculation that Apple is going to use the A17 Pro chip in the new Apple TV. Meaning that it will support Apple Intelligence (Apple's AI functionality) as well give a big boost to games played on the Apple TV.

If you're interested in using AI or playing games on your Apple TV, you'll want the new Apple TV. Otherwise, I don't think the upgrades will really matter since the current generation Apple TVs (3rd gen) are still great for just normal streaming activities.

Of course if a 4th gen gets announced, the 3rd gen prices may come down. So really just a matter of how long you're willing to wait.

I can’t wait for the new one, mainly because my remote on the first gen 4k is barely hanging on. I’ve dropped the damn thing so many times it’s busted to hell.

I’m also hoping there’s a broader range of accepted modern video codecs. There’s a few movies on my plex server that are encoded in a format my Apple TV won’t play, but my lg oled has no problem with them.

Other than that though, the box has more or less been perfect since day one. I used to occasionally have hdmi port connection issues, but I haven’t had to wiggle the cable to fix it in ages.

I would think you could use an Xbox/playstation controller via Bluetooth, but I don’t know the real answer
