Thought these might be interesting to share as some of us have more years of experience others.
I’m still fairly new at 4-5 years but…
-Protein and overall calorie goals
-Consistency
-Progressive overload

1. You can't outwork a bad diet.
2. Count macros. It taught me how to eat properly.
3. If you're older, get your test and free test checked. Get on TRT, if needed/desired.

Programming and diet.
Some buddies and I worked out constantly in HS and had no idea what we were doing. The weight training teacher was the football coach and he didn’t GAF. If we just had a little guidance on diet and programming we’d have been monsters.
We wasted so much time and energy on “curl day”.

Started at 45 years old. Now 48. HGH and high protein with creatine. Gym three days a week. Beat shape ever and somewhat jacked.

It's too long to list I started in the mid 1990's as a 6'3 160 pound teenager basketball player reading 'Flex' magazine and doing what the pros were supposedly doing. Well, I gained a little bit of weight and strength but I was over training like crazy, not getting enough sleep, not properly hydrated, eating way too many carbohydrates, I was getting enough protein was about all I was doing right. The supplementation back then was awful with garbage like 'Designer Whey' and creatine products with tons of added sugar. Its a miracle I had any success. Finally, I figured out it was steroids and hgh that made these guys huge and I started to grow once I got my hands on 10 sustenon preloads and took one a week.

What about programming do you wish you would’ve known sooner?
Hypertrophy
Going to failure or one left in the tank
hitting 8-15 reps
16 sets per muscle per week

I would have gotten as big as I could in my 20s and benefited from the natural tests of a young blood. Then worried about cutting as as I got older.
Other than that I did well.. Glad I stayed natural too. Best decision made.

For a group of HS sophomores?
Starting Strength and similar beginner programs that focused on big compound lifts to build core strength. Instead we got our exercises from Muscle and Fitness magazine and focused on the beach muscles…as the coach called them.
ETA: also overtraining is a thing. We had weight training 5 days a week and went to a buddy’s dad’s warehouse gym 3 days a week in addition. Had some great times but did way too much of some things and way too little of others.

Diet
Consistent workout routine
Neither of those will work if T levels are low, though.

Alcohol free. Made no sense killing yourself all week just to nullify your gains on the weekend.

1. How important adequate sleep is. Hits you harder when you start having kids.
2. I wish I would have realized sooner that my body responds to compound only workouts close to the same as adding in all the auxiliary movements.
3. How important micro nutrition is to supporting every bodily function. Got a bunch of bloodwork done and a functional medicine doctor recommended supplements to balance out several nutrient/mineral deficiencies, and everything got better. My natural test went from in the 300’s to in the 600’s with just that and diet.

1 eat more protein
2 focus on the big compound lifts, especially if time is limited
3 drink at least one gallon of water with minerals every day
4 become a professional sleeper. eye shade, ear plugs, mouth tape, no alcohol, no screens after dark, blue light blockers after dark

-Get really proficient in the basic lifts (squats, deadlifts, presses) before muddying the waters.
-Train around others that are bigger and stronger than you.
-Don't overcomplicate diet. We all essentially know what we're supposed to eat and what to limit. Three well-balanced meals and you're set.

What’s your location and who is your functional medicine doctor?
Just checking if we are in the same area.
Thanks

I am interested in this.
Can you elaborate on some of the changes she suggested?
