Former Mastadon lead guy, guitarist, singer

One of the best musicians to ever come out of the Birmingham area.

quote:

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The former lead guitarist for the popular heavy metal band Mastodon died overnight in Atlanta.

William Brent Hinds was killed Wednesday night in a crash while on a Harley Davidson when the driver of a BMW SUV failed to yield while making a turn at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Boulevard, according to police.

The Fulton County medical examiner’s office confirmed his death.

The 51-year-old was best known for his time with the Atlanta-based band Mastodon, in which he co-founded in 2000 with bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor.

In March, according to Billboard, the band announced that they “mutually decided to part ways” with Hinds. However, just earlier this month, Hinds said he was kicked out.

This is crazy. He had just quit Mastdon a couple of months ago & had been going scorched earth on the Mastodon guys on social media.

What a wild sequence of events the last few months

He was going nuts on social media about the other members being shitty. He was always a borderline type of person, but I liked the flair he brought to the band.

In a way it's a bit relieving reading the report here as I wasn't going to be surprised if it had been a suicide.

When I saw his name pop up on my feed I was expecting it to be about another war of words with his former bandmates, not this. Terrible. RIP.

Well this sucks

My mother in law knows his mom. She already lost a son 15 years ago from a heart attack. A mom shouldn’t have to bury and kids much less two.

Mine is burying her third kid right now. My brother died Monday night and I'm the only one left.
I'm going to be more careful going forward.

Brent was a mess personally. Rumor was he was actually fired. He always said he hates metal and hated being in a metal band. He was the one who brought the more prog elements to Mastodon. Still they were as tight a group as you could find in rock and he was part of that.

Yeah Mastodon became a way to pay the bills for him instead of something he enjoyed.

He used to say stuff like "I'm so ready for this Mastodon thing to be done with" and actively hated the last few albums. Which personally they are my least favorite of theirs too, but its become clear to me they took a dip because Brent was kind of checked out during the creative process compared to the other albums..

I did not know that he had left Mastodon. I saw them with Russian Circles and Eagles of Death Metal not too, too long ago. RIP.

Nothing to do with this story in particular, but I was on a motorcycle ONCE decades ago. Never again.

Crack the Skye is one of my favorite albums of all time.

I hate to hear this. Hinds was always a bird of a different feather in comparison to the rest of the band, but they made some incredible work together.
