Economic Ten Commandments by Abraham Lincoln

I recently found an old bookmark my economics professor gave me over 30 years ago. This was an actual paper bookmark you would use to mark the page in the book where you stopped reading. He made this compilation of quotes and titled it "Economic Ten Commandments by Abraham Lincoln". These ten were printed on the bookmark:
quote:
1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
3. You cannot help small people by tearing down big people.
4. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
5. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
6. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
7. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
8. You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
9. You cannot build character and courage by taking away initiative and independence.
10. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could do for themselves.

Yep and he is the only president to allow 600,000 deaths on American soil.
That is more than any other war that we got involved with.

These sentiments were created by the Rev. William J. H. Boetcker, who lectured around the United States about industrial relations at the turn of the twentieth century. There is no evidence linking them to Lincoln as the author.

Sounds like ten things we like to do, by Democrats.

Communists hate that list.
I was about to say Democrats break all those rules, and today, Dems and Communists think alike.

Good sentiments but they’re just conclusory statements.
You could find a top ten liberal tenets that would appeal to your benevolence and concern for the common man.
We are humans and life is a human endeavour. There is more to it that a top ten list on a bookmark.

I’m a big John Wilkes Booth fan myself.

These weren't written by Lincoln but still hold truth.

Lincoln was an awful economics president.
About as anti free market as a president can be.
He was a Henry Clay disciple

Jesus Christ, Francis. Lighten up. I'm trapped on a business trip in Bumfrick Hungary and it's a Friday night. Chill the frick out.

No matter who wrote it, that's a very good list of economic truisms. It touches on two of the most important ways that governments destroy their economy; debt and bad incentives. Goes to show that there's nothing new under the sun, just new packaging of old ideas.
