Length of time it took recent most successful head coaches to win a Nati (6.5-9 years)

Dabo Swinney - 8.5 years (interim in 2008)
Jim Harbaugh - 9 years
Kirby Smart - 7 years
Ryan Day - 6.5 years (interim in 2018)
Then these coaches went on to build reoccurring high success aside from Harbaugh.
LSU in Saban, Miles, Coach O were much faster than what most programs take to accomplish this. I think we have a fantastic shot at a Nati this year, but just relaying how long it has taken the most successful head coaches of our time to win their 1st Nati. Even Saban was 4 years at LSU.
I think recruiting has been great, 1st rated transfer class. Although we will end up around 5th ranked class of 26 all said and done, our average rating per player is 1st in FBS. We just have fewer than USC or TAMU in quantity. I've seen at least 2 NIL rankings showing LSU is ranked at 2nd or 3rd in the country which was higher than I thought we would be. Blake Baker has Defense looking up as we went from 110th in ypg allowed to 63rd in 2024, and seemingly Top 25 this year. Kyle Williams helped pull in 4, 5 star DLineman in class of 2026, Bernard Gooden is wrecking shop I hear. The only thing I have any concern going forward is who will be our QB in 2026. I feel we will likely get a top transfer for that. I think things are pretty good right now.

I’m not asking for national championships every season. I don’t however think it’s too much to ask to be in the playoffs almost every season. Which Kelly hasn’t really come close to that yet.

I’ve never understood why there’s never a QB2 ready to go.
In recent years, anytime QB1 comes out, even for one series, QB2 is only allowed to hand off the ball. Is it lack of preparedness or lack of confidence in the player?
And in the Les Miles era, QB1 was almost an afterthought because “defense wins championships” so QB2 was even less prepared.

year 1 he was definitely close. he played in the seccg, albeit he got smoked. but lets not pretend he' hasn't been putting band aids on bazooka wounds when it comes to this roster, and some self inflicted coaching hires. but unlike miles, he sees the issues and swiftly addresses it. i say from this year on, he needs to be in the playoffs moving forward. saying he needed to be in the playoffs the previous years is just blinded fandom.

The difference is with the transfer portal you no longer have to go through 4-5 years of recruiting to get your guys. There is the potential to go from bad to great instantly, and because that potential exists it means fan bases will be less patient. Not saying it’s realistic or fair to the coach, but because in theory it’s possible, people will be jumpy.

Those coaches were much younger than BK when they arrived at their championship school.

BK is building a solid program.

OP makes a great point.
Natty’s really don’t typically come fast for programs. What BK is doing is on par with those guys and I think we do eventually get one with him.

6.5 years? How long has Brian Kelly been a head coach? Like way more than that, right?
Posted on 8/7/25 at 8:21 am to Saunson69
Those coaches were both younger than BK and all at their first premier job where they actually had a shot to win a NC. Brian Kelly is 63 years old and going into his 15 season as the head coach at a school capable of winning a NC. It's not now or never, but it's "pretty soon or never."

Ryan Day and Kirby Smart were put in great positions to win early.
Harbaugh and Swinney got mediocre at best teams.
Kelly got a full on dumpster fire.

The long-game is still to build through recruiting.

2022 Team Composite Rankings: LSU #8

The last three LSU HCs all won a NC within 4 years of taking the job. Fair or not, that is the standard BK is held to. Particularly when you consider none of prior three LSU HCs were as accomplished as BK when they were hired by LSU. Obviously, no one knew in the early 2000's how great Saban would become. But I think it is pretty telling that Les and O never got a sniff for a big job when they left LSU...despite having a NC on the resume. That say the market believed LSU, the program, was the big reason for their success...not the other way around.
The program and its inherent advantages are still the same. It's up to BK to maximize it. Thus far, he hasn't. Hopefully this year is the year he does.

Those rankings don't reflect the roster that Kelly inherited. None of he 5* players from the 2021 season (Kayshon Boutte, John Emery, Masson Smith, Phillip Webb, Sage Ryan, Derrick Davis Jr., Jacquelin Roy) lived up to their hype at LSU under Kelly. BKly added four 5* players in 2022 - Perkins, Daniels, Campbell and Howard that basically turned the program back in the right direction. .

This is a dumb take, and you should feel dumb. Kelly had 39 scholarship players when he took over in November of 2021.
The 2022 roster was ranked high because:
Kelly signed
Daniels
Perkins
Wingo
Lacy
Campbell
And others. Not many remained from CEO roster.

Sure it does. In fact, those rankings are largely based off the roster he inherited.
