Mike Tyson and Hulk Hogan were the two most consequential athletes when me and my brothers were kids. I think a big part of it was the mystique. That's back when the only time that Hulk Hogan wrestled was on pay per view, and my mom would never let us get the pay per view. All we could do is rely on the occasional Hulk interview or Hulk snippet on the cable wrestling shows. This created the mystique.

Obviously it was the same way for Mike Tyson. We couldn't get that pay per view either. Back then the best you could hope for was some still shots of the Tyson fight the next morning on Sports Center, which added to the mystique. Mike Tyson Punchout also made Tyson larger than life for me and my brothers.

In the day and age of the internet and Youtube, it will be hard to create that kind of mystique around an athlete ever again. It was a pretty good time to be a kid.

Back in the 90s I kind of viewed Mike Tyson as a villain. I knew for a fact he was the baddest man on the planet, but I wasn't a fan.

Now I have great respect for Mike. He is awesome.

He was definintely a villain in Mike Tyson Punchout, always looming and waiting to beat your arse if you could ever figure out how to beat the Super Macho Man lol

It’s sad how much the media tries to force us to turn gay. The only sports they push are lesbians (wnba), dudes making out (ufc), and a guy dating a tranny (Travis kelce)

Hulk once said that promoters tried to arrange a fight between him and Tyson and that it didn't happen because Tyson backed out because he was scared.

That first attempt at fighting Tyson was always demoralizing as hell.

Three lightning punches, instant TKO.

Walking around with his arse hanging out before getting beat up by a YouTube star kinda took some of his respect, from me.

It’s obvious he was contractually obligated not to harm the pretty boy. You could tell he was holding back and doing as told for a payday.

i mean he pretty much was a villain in his early life. just because he's turned it around and become a pretty endearing older guy doesnt take from that.

You don’t know why? Hell, I just assume any famous boxer/fighter lives life rough outside of the ring. Alcohol and drugs are readily available for those guys, not to mention possibilities of steroids and pills that will destroy your liver.

He was a despicable human being in the 80s and 90s. Holyfield and Lennox beat some humility into him and he actually matured into an adult in the last 20 years.

He's still the most overrated heavyweight in history. He was 2-3 against the best fighters of his era and his two wins were against Holmes and Spinks, who were both well past their primes.

Time to do the honorable thing and commit digital seppuku. Your schtick has cratered to LucasP levels of sadness.

One was real

One was an entertainer and a character

Both were superior athletes

Both made a lot of money and made people a lot of money.

I was and always will be grateful and thankful that I witnessed that period of the 80’s and 90’s
