Do you tip on the entire check amount or the pre-tax check amount?

Team Pre-Tax here

I don’t do any math. I just put what I think is fair

If the service was good, I double the tax. If it was very average to poor, I do slightly less than double the tax. If the server is a smoke show, I double the tax and add $5 and just deal with the blowback from the wife

Usually 20% of the total check

10% of the total then double it. Easy way to figure 20%.

Roughly this.
20% and round either up or down.

Neither. The guy that serves me for a $50 meal does no more work than the one that serves me for a $15 one.
Flat tip depending on the time and level of effort.

I get the check, see what the tax is, add 20% + round up. So if tax is $11.75 20% is $2.35. Double that is $4.70 I tip $5.00. Then I adjust depending on the quality of service. I don't ever give less than double the tax.. Service would have to be horrible for me to do that, but if service was really good, I might leave a $20.00.
If I have cash on me I will likely tip based on the bills available. On tax that's $2.35 (this is just an example) I would just likely give a $10.

^This, but it should be on the pre-tax amount.

Pre-tax, why should I tip on what the government is getting.
Posted on 7/17/25 at 12:03 pm to weagle1999
I round up the total to the next even dollar and then tip whatever % seems right.
Pre tax tipping? Why?

Unwritten rule.
15% day minimum. Good service, 20%
20% night minimum " " 22-26%

I do this as well, I am a frequent flyer at a few local restaurants and they’ve figured out that I will tip them well.

The minimum for both is 0% if the service is dog shite.

The government didn’t do anything to get you your order. No tipping on tax. That’s retarded.
