Track is on its own at Washington State University – and in abridged form, too.
The school has announced that field events will be eliminated from the program’s offerings, and that sprints and hurdles will be scaled back in favor of a “distance-focused approach.”

It’s only gonna get worse in the era of NIL and revenue sharing.

But the athletes only needed a few bucks to get a hamburger

At that point, what is the goal of even having a team? May as well just eliminate it.

This was always the logical endpoint. And for some people it was always the goal. There are people that want to end college sports and pushing for athlete compensation was a route they knew would help meet their goal.

Getting left out of conference realignment couldn't have helped.

it didnt, but schools like arizona and iowa state have already said they dont have the money and unless they get private donations, they will start cutting full programs.
but understand there is a whole other world outside of the SEC/Big10/ACC/Big12 and those schools are about to start slashing programs.

I dont know how any track program makes money.

They don’t. College sports were never originally intended to make money

Washington State and Oregon State need to suck it up and join the Mountain West. You obviously aren’t as “prestigious” as you think you are and will fit in fine with Boosie State, SDSU, UNLV, Wyoming, Colorado State. Their athletics will probably actually flourish and create much better rivals. They will no longer be little brother in the conference.

these should be club sports anyway.

They don’t, they are a prestige program if you have to lose money on non-money sports.
The only money sports are football and men’s basketball, with baseball being a special case in the SEC. Anything else is a money loser to different degrees.

their CC team will get double duty and they aren’t doing anything else basically

Why would you assume they want something to replace it?

Both of those schools are wasting millions on bloated administrators in the athletic department.
And they have you idiots eating right out of their hands as they continue to cash checks and not do shite
Edit Iowa States 2023 report:
quote:
Coaching salaries, benefits and bonuses: $19.69 million
Support staff and administrative salaries and benefits: $18.74 million million
Direct overhead and administrative expenses: $21.82 million

There are probably only 25 or so schools that can essentially keep on going with the status quo and hit the salary caps. Almost everyone else will either not payout the salaries or cut sports until they can pay out the salaries.

that is somewhat true. there are prolly double that who could afford it if they do lots of restructuring.
problem is many of these places have lots of debt from things like facility upgrades etc. but if they restructured many things they could afford much more
i look for coaching salaries to take a big hit, facility upgrades to be paused, AD staffing to be completely restructured etc. then start cutting sports
but the days of a saban style support staff...that is prolly gone and play on the field will reflect that.

They can afford it, they choose not to. Iowa states athletic department made $10 million dollars in profit in 2023 after a metric shite ton of waste and now they want to cry poor because they don’t get to keep all the money. It’s total bullshite, and people want to blame the athletes. Pathetic
