Microwaves...they seem to last forever. I wonder why they seem to have escaped the dreaded modern appliance plague of short life spans?

Not in my experience. I was pissed when my old microwave finally went out. We replaced it with a newer one, and several years later some of the buttons don't work and dumb shite like that.

You are right. My microwave is 18 years old.

I can see some households having the same ones they bought in the mid seventies into the 90s. In Sherwood my aunt had one that was installed in the wall like an oven.

Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve bought a microwave because my old one broke. Matter of fact, I don’t think I’ve ever even been to someone’s house and had them say, sorry my microwave is broken, you’ll have to use the oven.

I think microwaves and air fryers are trashy but they serve a purpose! We put an outlet in our pantry when we remodeled and that's where both the microwave and air fryer live. Keeps the kitchen looking clean.

Elaborate on how they’re trashy, im genuinely curious to see this explained.

My built in GE didn’t even make eight years, and it was a bitch getting another one that matched the trim kit (with shims and finagling), and trim kits if you can find them are more expensive than the new microwave.

For an appliance?

The fact that you think several years is a good life span for one sort of proves the OP's point about appliances.

I replaced the magnetron in my MIL's microwave 20 years ago and she still uses it to this day.

I think microwaves mounted over stoves is one of the worst trends to ever exist. Microwaves are ugly and no matter what you do they seem to always be nasty on the inside. They also just look out of place in a high end kitchen which is why you see people trying to hide them in drawers and hidden behind panels in Islands.

Nobody in the history of the world ever walked into a kitchen and said WOW I LOVE YOUR MICROWAVE

As for air fryers they're just gross and should never be hanging out on the counter full time in a kitchen.

I think the rotating arms are now crap.

But the heating device/element seem to be flawless.

Ok so having them isn’t trashy, but having them permanently displayed is.

Where do you stand in microwaves mounted in the wall, say above an oven mounted in the wall?

Yes. We use ours all the time. Having it displayed out in the open is tacky. I should have clarified.

I'm not familiar with the all in one you mention but I feel like they aren't the most long lasting things so I wouldn't carve out a nook for a custom microwave. We have a Frigidaire microwave I think cost $400 and if it dies in 3-5 years it won't hurt my feelings to pick up whatever is on the market at that time to replace it

It’s definitely not ovens. I’ve had mine for less than three years and of course 2 months past its warranty the ignition component has gonna out twice, now I think the control board is going out bc it won’t keep the time.

The house we're currently renting has an ancient microwave that works awesome.

Their technology hasn't changed much in 20 years. Last major update was when we went away from the manual knobs and buttons to the touch pad.

Hardly.
Had my Sears Kenmore, made in the U.S.A. for over 30 years. It died 3 years ago. I've had to buy 2 since then.
