Athletes get paid going forward.
It will face further legal challenges, in all likelihood, but a major milestone nonetheless. Hopefully the new regime will curb the obscene abuses stemming from the intersection of the transfer portal and unchecked pay-for-play in the guise of NIL.

Now that schools are free to directly pay money to the athletes, the Era of Amateur college sports has come to end.
It is now professional sports.
It is now professional sports.

It’s been professional sports for a long time now. At least now, maybe, some speed bumps can be put in place.

I don’t see it taking that long. Not necessarily no passion, just less interest.

Need to restrict transfers of athletes that have accepted nil money for a certain amount of years

WTF are you talking about? Who controls the house and senate ?

They still won’t be able to regulate anything related to NIL, but since direct pay for play is now allowed maybe NIL won’t be as big of a farce as it currently is.

Nope. Certain teams will always have donors willing to throw some extra $$$ to try to have an advantage. The race to destroy college athletics will continue.

Where we are is so fundamentally stupid.
They ARE amateur athletes.
It’s ridiculous…

House means that, starting July 1, 2025, athletes can receive pay from the college AND NIL. NIL will still make a huge difference, IMO.
I saw where a softball pitcher at Texas Tech signed a $1.5 million NIL deal for 25-26. LSU does not have any single baseball or softball player who receives more than $250K from LSUNIL sources.

Actually they will. NIL will have to be paid fair market for service the athletes perform. All NIL deals will have to approved. Now the under the table deals will still be there like they always have been. Until the time that they go full pro sports mode.

That’s what the deal was supposed to be when all of this started too. All of you morons believed it then too.

If you think a committee will be able to enforce fair market value I have beachfront property to sell you in Alaska. Look at how Europe is handling fair market value for sponsors of soccer teams. There's no true way to regulate it. Fair market is what people are willing to pay.

This year it’s 1/2 NIL and 1/2 profit sharing $…be interesting to see what the contracts look like a year from now. Probably more profit sharing %, unless you show out and get NIL contracts.

If there is one sure fire way to make things worse, it is to have the federal government get involved

Nah. Schools will ignore the rules, still pay players under the table if its needed.
All thats happened is the pay scale has been dramatically increased.

They are no longer amateur athletes. That is all in the past now. American University and College sports are now professional sports played by professional athletes. It is true that many of the athletes may not receive a salary or any kind of bonus payment of money, but, that's just because the commercial market governing this new professional industry mandates that their services aren't valuable enough to warrant payment.
College sports are now Professional sports.

I don't get it, how will the Federal government be involved? Not trolling, I just don't know what the federal gov't role is supposed to be?
