You car keys to get the hell out of there

I go to the beach to relax, not have to make trips up and down to the condo whenever the baby is cranky/hungry etc. Good luck

An 8 month old isn't going to last long, and will need to nap in the A/C repeatedly and often. Bring the baby monitor, or one of you is never going to be on the sand for long. Obviously bring the sound machine too, you're not going to be able to hear surf through closed windows and doors for the baby to sleep.

Good tupperware for fruit and other finger foods for the baby. A crap ton of baby wipes, because you'll be using them to clean sandy hands, pacifiers, and all the sand that ends up in their fleshy bits.

Your wife will spend an hour packing shite for the "trip" to the beach from the house/condo, and you'll probably spend an hour out there, max, and have to bathe the baby, change clothes, etc. It'll be fun.

Have something oversized to provide shade. Also bring an oversized blanket too.

Serious tip - bring a laundry hamper out to the beach
Easy to carry and it stays (relatively) clean vs a towel
Obviously have a towel too
Depending on size of the kid they could even sleep in it (shaded) - they tend to like the fort-like feeling

Otherwise anything under 1.5-2 years at the beach sucks

Very low expectations for relaxation.

8 months is tough, for slightly older toddlers/kids I always bring a cheap 3’ round blow up pool and a big enough bucket to fill it up. Whether to cool down or rinse hands and feet, it works wonders. Now they are older, a 5 gallon bucket does the same trick to wash hands.

Lots of shade, a major victory would be a 2-3 hour nap on the beach in the shade.

Beer!

From Target. Wife and I love the beach, and we've been bringing our son since he was a few months old, and this has been invaluable.

This.
They weren't that fancy when my kids were that age, but a simple pack-n-play with a sun cover was very valuable. The beach breeze kept them comfortable and they could sleep whenever needed. We could have the baby in that thing and actually be able to relax instead of chasing a kid everywhere.

We tried a regular tent, but that didn't have enough open space for air flow. It got warm in there too quickly.

Patience with the baby and the wife
If you are directly on the beach you can leave a lot of your stuff at your umbrella so it is not a full load every time you go up.

You've got to have shade, we have a Neso Grande, works great, easy to setup, packs down about the size of a loaf of bread. We also had one of those pop up baby tents, gave us a nice place to let the kid lay down/take a nap if they would. I'd also suggest a backpack ice chest, the bigger the better, we'd bring bottles, juice, snacks, sunscreen etc. and the backpack ones are easier to load up and carry around.

Biggest tip is patience, some kids love it, other's hate it, take what they'll give you at that age, it might be great, it might now.

One of these with an umbrella over it to keep them cool. Get you a few buckets of water from the gulf. Folds up pretty small and don't have to blow up.

As the poster above me said, bring the grandparents. Pay for their trip if you have to.

one of those wagons with big wheels to carry all the necessary shite back and forth

A grandparent or babysitter so they can stay inside during the day and come out only in early mornings and evening when it’s not as hot and bright. Wish we had that then but it was just me and wife.

We did this every year after they were born, it is hard… you have to rotate and take turns going inside if you have no help. Need tons of shade, largest beach mat/blanket known to man so they can not get in the sand and put it all in their mouth or eyes. We used a small inflatable pool for them to sit in under the tent or wash off any sand. The only saving grace for ours was they loved to be in the ocean; we had a good floatie they can sit in with a roof, they were happy just chilling if the waves were not rough.

Lots of baby powder to help get the sand off them. Works great.
