I have watched a few foreign films from various countries, like France (Le Samouri), Italy (few Pasolini and Argento films), Russia / Soviet Union (Tarkovsky), Sweden (Bergman), but I feel like I have only scratched the surface. Looking for recommendations, pretty much open to anything

This is like asking for music. I could probably recommend 100 from my memory, but what are you looking for?

*ETA: get you a library card and a Kanopy subscription. They have an immense foreign film library for free.

Although I hated the movie, everyone else loved Pan's Labyrinth (Spain).

I really liked Amelie and A Monster in Paris (animated), which are both French films. Obviously the GOAT French films is the Professional.

The Passenger is Italian film that is fantastic with a young Jack Nicholas starring in it.

Das Boot is a great German film.

Japan has some fantastic movies but most of my recommendations would be animated films from them

And India has Bollywood, which is it's own category of movies. The best mainstream example I can give to dip your toes in would be RRR.

I'm probably forgetting a dozen others but those were the first ones that popped into my mind.

Edit* damn I knew I would forget something. City of God was recommended and I strongly urge to give it a watch as well. It is such a good movie.

Wim Wenders Perfect Days
A Prayer Before Dawn (true story about a brit stuck in thai prison)
How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (great thai film)

some recent watches that come to mind.

This is a great list. Never saw I Saw the Devil but everyone of the others are great movies.

Pan's Labyrinth, CTHD, and CIty of God being all time good and Parasite is probably my favorite movie in the past 5 years or so.

I'd add older Kurasawa films to the must watch list. Can't go wrong with any of them. Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress being my two favorites.

Would also highly recommend not wasting your time with 8 1/2 (Italian). Considered an all time great but very few movies have pissed me off like 8 1/2. Just a crap movie of 2+ hours of a guy sniffing his own farts. Truly pretentious movie.

Max (via TCM) and Kanopy have a LOT of classic foreign films. Kanopy has an insane amount of modern foreign films.

Prime and Peacock have lots of modern foreign films, primarily Asian.
