I’m not aware of any Chinese vehicles driving the roads in the US. I think Volvo might be the only exception but not certain if their vehicles are Chinese built or just Chinese owned.

The electric car manufacturer BYD has surpassed Tesla in sales yet I see none on our roads-

“BYD is a Shenzhen-based Chinese EV giant and it officially overtook Tesla in annual sales last year. The company pulled in 777.1 billion yuan (around $107.1 billion) in 2024 — a 29% increase year-on-year and well above Tesla’s $97.7 billion for the same period.”

Are Chinese cars banned here or just taxed /tariffed high?

Volvo is a Swedish company. Not sure where they are made.

Do their cars meet the NHTSA safety standards for the United States? If not, that might be a reason and a red flag.

Search: Where are Volvo trucks assembled?
Answer: Volvo trucks are assembled at several locations around the world. In North America, the New River Valley Assembly Plant in Dublin, Virginia produces all Volvo trucks sold in the region. Other plants where Volvo trucks are manufactured include Curitiba, Brazil; Umeå, Sweden; Gothenburg, Sweden; Ghent, Belgium; Durban, South Africa; Bangalore, India; Bangkok, Thailand; and Brisbane, Australia.

Search: What aren't Chinese vehicles sold in America?
Answer: Chinese automobiles are not widely available in America primarily due to a combination of tariffs, national security concerns, and market entry challenges. Specifically, tariffs imposed by the US government on Chinese-made vehicles, alongside concerns about potential spying through navigation and communication features, have made it difficult for Chinese automakers to enter the American market. Furthermore, building a dealer network and establishing a strong brand presence in the US require significant investment and effort.

A lot of parts are made in China, even for American car companies.

Polestar manufactures most of its cars in China. My BIL bough one because he's mad at Elon. Like most libs, he's just fine with Xi's politics.

I have seen one and only one. I would not have known what it was had I not read an article about Chinese cars and how difficult it was to get one here. this was a few months ago, so pre-tariff.

Isn't Trump trying to bring this to an end?

Translates to: China unwilling to share harvested data with US insurance companies without consent/knowledge of the vehicle owner (unlike Ford, GM, etc...)

I"ve heard BYD are so cheap, that even with 200% tariff, they would be price competitive here. Supposedly, they are very well made and perform great.

One under-appreciated aspect of the whole thing is how much gasoline use has been diverted out of China due to their adoption of EV. Of course, there's no environmental gains because their grid is mostly coal-based.

Great post

I have only heard good thing about the technology of these BYD cars. They are the most advanced EV's made today with regard to battery tech.

Personally, I don't want them here. I prefer to forgo US public getting them now, in favor of waiting for other companies not in China to implement that battery technology.

China is hands down the best in the world at battery tech and production. Buying their stuff will only make them more powerful.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I did not and still do not support the 2035 ev mandate. But when it was reversed I didn't celebrate it as a huge win because market forces will get us there anyway... the right way.... freedom of choice.

Geely is the parent company, but I don't know that makes it a "chinese car" for the purposes we're talking about here. Volvo itself is still a Swedish company.

I want to say Polestar (evs) are Chinese made. Also the Buick Envision. There might be a few others.

As a general rule, most the chinese stuff we buy has much better quality than the chinese stuff available to chinese citizens. Cars are a perfect example. They're largely small, cheap, pieces of shite that you have to purchase every 5-7 years. The cars the export are not available to citizens as they are much more costly and have a higher QA/QC process.

In 2021, Volvo Cars acquired an additional 50 percent of its shares in the Daqing Volvo Car Manufacturing company, as well as the Shanghai Volvo Car Research and Development company in China. While still under the Geely umbrella, Volvo essentially took full ownership of its Chinese manufacturing and sales operations.

Volvo Cars manufactures vehicles in several locations worldwide. The main production facilities are located in Torslanda, Sweden (where the XC60, XC90, and V90 Cross Country are made), Ghent, Belgium (where the XC40, V60 Cross Country, and C40 Recharge are produced), and Daqing, China (where the S90 and S90L are assembled). Additionally, Volvo has a manufacturing plant in South Carolina, USA, where the S60 was produced until 2024, and the fully electric EX90 SUV is now being manufactured.

Until they're determined to be an ally, anything made by an enemy should not be sold here period. How fcking hard is that to understand?

I believe so. Eric Swalwell was riding one a few years back.
