Kid just got his Comprehensive Aid Package from LSU. 25K per year after all the scholarships and grants. TOPS should be another 7-8K but still too expensive. I remember paying 3K/year for my Masters at the turn of the century, and even that was offset by TAs and RAs

It’s $43k outstate now… at Alabama.

Love Bama, roll tide and all that.

But $43k for a state school that isn’t even top 100 is dumb.

This seems like a bubble waiting to pop.

I have a high school senior next year, and I don’t know what advice to give her.

Ask for an itemized bill. You'll see how big of a racket it is.

it won’t though because people will do whatever it takes to get their kids through college and as long as the government is handing out the money for it there is no incentive for any of it stop.

Back in early 90s, I paid $750 a semester and I could rent books. Rent was $250 per month and I lived on $250 for food and extras. I had a part time job too.

Boy those government guaranteed loans immune from discharge really were a help!

We have a family member's kid trying to get in an Ivy League School, probably a fat chance since he's white.

But this is an example of one year's costs:

Detailed Breakdown:
Tuition: $59,320
Health Services: $1,800
Housing Rate: $13,532
Student Services: $3,676
Total Billed Costs: $86,926 (includes tuition, fees, housing, food, and other expenses)

Tell them to go to a school where they will be in the top 25%. They will have best chance for success and the school will pay for most of it.

Or go the OF route.

My kid's mom is encouraging her to go out of the state. The problem is that me and her mom don't make enough money to even put a dent in the debt she's going to have to put herself into in order to do that. It's idiotic. I keep telling her to stay in LA for undergrad because that debt is going to keep her up at night and we can't afford to cover it.

Get the federal government out of the student loan business and make colleges actually have to compete in a real marketplace

The fact that we’re trying to address existing student loan debt and not the cause is arse backwards
