Anyone ever set up payment plans with the IRS to pay taxes?

I’d rather just pay a monthly amount for a few months to pay what I owe instead of the lump sum.

How difficult is it? Can anyone assist?

Send what you can with your 2024 balance due, you'll get a letter in a month or so with them saying essentially "we've received your payment and you still have a balance due of "X" to set up a payment plan call this number"

You still pay interest on any balance owed so you are voluntarily paying more.

But you can apply online. I think there’s a application fee as well.

IRS.gov

It is a pretty easy and straightforward process. Depending on how much you owe and if you have been late with any other payments in recent years, it is often automatically accepted.

The 15th is looming, I owe 10K due to taking some money out of an inherited IRA without withholding.

Didn’t have an issue the one time I did it. Just call, that’s the worst part, calling. Or try online. But is it work the interest you will pay if you have the means to pay in full now?

Actually, do it all online. If you call, after 1.5 hours on hold you'll get some dindu with screaming kids in the background and the person will walk away from the phone for a few periods of time, be of zero help and have to "transfer" you which means hanging up on you.

(my only experience with calling the IRS)

Like others said, pretty easy and almost guaranteed acceptance the first time. However, if I recall correctly you must stay current on future tax obligations during the payoff term so take that into account

It’s not hard at all. As long as you apply for the payment plan and start paying something right away, you should be good.

Make sure your return is TIMELY filed. failure to file penalty is 5% of your balance per month up to 25%. Then state penalties can be just as bad -- depending on the state.

If you decide to not pay by the 15th at least file an extension.

You also are charged a fee to set it up. I think it’s $88

Yes. Give them a call.

They can do anything they want to with you and there's not really a damn thing you can do about it.

Give them a call and they'll be happy to work with you unless you've screwed them in the past. Either way, give them a call.

I thought with an extension you still had to send in estimated taxes owed?

Why not earn interest on what you owe (lump sum). Enjoy time value of the money.

Just filed and set one up through my IRS account. You have setup 3 or 6 month short term plans with minimal penalty but they also have a longer term plan option if needed.
