New Trucks/Transmissions

I am considering a new truck. There is a lot bad chatter on the internet about the GM/Ford 10 speed trans. The Ram uses a ZF 8 speed which doesn't have as much bad chatter out there. All three of those transmissions are based on the ZF design, it just seems that GM/Ford did some things different. Yes, the Ford and GM are the same, maybe slightly different gearing, but it was developed as a joint venture.
So with RAM you face a new engine, with GM/Ford you face a suspect transmission.
I'd prefer the old HEMI but I like an inline 6(Hurricane), the Ford eco-boost has been around awhile so I an not too concerned about it. The GM LS? whatever has been around a long time but suddenly I am hearing about lifter problems due to DOD. I do favor DOHC 4 valve designs in the 21st century, but the original LS really didn't give up anything in a truck application. I am not going to buy a full size truck with a 4 cylinder engine (GM), even with the turbo.
GM should have never dropped the Atlas inline 6.
Anyone got any opinions on these subjects? or experiences to relate?

I would stay away from the new Rams. That I6 turbo is causing all kinds of problems. Melting catalytic converters being one of them.

Zl1 Camaro with 10 speed. No problem. But I think it’s beefed up.

Been a Ford truck man all my life UNTIL I bought a new 2019 Lariat with the 5.0. Loved the truck. Best ride of any vehicle I’ve owned BUT the 10 speed transmission was a nightmare. Would give you a jolt like you’ve been rear ended. Brought to dealership and they reset adaptive learning on the computer. That didn’t fix the problem. Said they wanted to go into it. I decided to bail on it and traded it in on a Highlander. Didn’t want vehicle with transmission issues all over the Carfax. Ruined me on my opinion of Ford.

Ford's 10R80 is used in vehicles like the F-150, Mustang, Expedition, Ranger, and Bronco Raptor.
GM's 10L80 is found in models like the Chevrolet Silverado, Camaro ZL1, Tahoe, and GMC Sierra.

Not sure where you’re getting that. Could be happening somewhere I guess. We have sold a whole bunch of these Hurricane powered trucks and jeeps. We have had exactly one in the shop with a Powertrain issue. Again, not saying it ain’t happening, just that it ain’t happening here.

You can navel gaze on the Internet until the second coming. Maybe Ram owners are too busy putting racing stripes on their rides to spend all day complaining on the Internet? You also have what appears to be a good bit of astro-turfing arguments trying to direct people to file/join class action cases. The law firms can pay for the keyword optimization to make sure that the first ten pages of any search are going to be doom and gloom.
The 10 Speed was perfectly find in my last two Ford trucks, and the other four dudes I know that live within 100 yards of me have never complained about the transmission.

We have a 2018 F150 w/2.7 and the 10 speed trans.
Just hit 80k and so far so good. It does shift a little weird on occasion but I think it is just a characteristic of the transmission.
BTW I just dropped the pan, changed the filter, and swapped the plastic pan for an aluminum PPE pan with a drain plug so it will be easier to do a spill and fill later (stock pan is a throwaway anyway).
80k is hardly enough miles to see if it will stand the test of time but we'll see.
There are lots of people on forums that have had problems but there are literally millions of vehicles out there with this trans.

I have a 2020 GMC Sierra.
I have loved the truck but it's had issues with starting on occasion that the dealership can't diagnose, tends to happen when it's very hot outside.
The other, it started riding really rough the last few months ( about 75k miles) so I brought it in. They said it was the transmission fluid, since it was changed its been fine but I'm wondering for how long? Is it a bandaid for a serious transmission issue or is it fixed?

i had a similar experience with a 19' lariat. Had it serviced, then it started overheating and puking fluid. Would shift so hard you thought it dropped the dive shaft. I was afraid it was going to leave me on the side of the road. As much as I hate to admit, I traded it in on a Tacoma.

All completely true. You have to realize that with the sheer volume of full-size trucks that GM and Ford sell annually, in the literal millions, there are going to be bad ones, but for every bad one you hear about, there's probably 500-1000 more that will not have any issues whatsoever.

The 8HP has been out in its various forms since 2012 and has been put in probably 10 million vehicles since then, between Audi BMW and DCJR, so I would not worry about the transmission in a new Ram. It is one of the better automatic transmissions ever made, from an overall perspective.

Damned either way. The new 10 speed developed by GM and Ford should be considered a light duty transmission. It was developed for fuel efficiency over everything else. They have been extremely problematic, a lot of failures in the 50k mile range.
I recently had the starter replaced in my '20 Ram, while picking it up, I chatted about getting a new truck with my mechanic because there have been some ususal Ram type issues popping up like a leaky rear window and some other small things (I have the non-e torque 5.7 and 8 speed ZF). My mechanic told me not to bother and just keep up with this one. Keep up with oil changes and he's not seeing any Rams with lifter issues post '18 or so. Only in ones that go 10k miles between oil changes. He also said that he's seeing a very high amount of transmission issues with Ford and GM and a really wide array of typical Stellantis headaches with the new Rams, because he gets overrun from the local CJDR dealer when they are at capacity on warranty repairs or if they are struggling to chase things down and can't commit time. He said the new I6 ram engines are pretty good when talking about the engine itself, but they did a poor job with some material choices outside of the internals. Cooling, exhaust, electrical. but nothing really bad. He actually likes the hurricane platform.
Toyota seems to have the turbo 6's sorted after al the recalls, but I'd give them another year.

2021 XLT, rear axle broke on me driving down I10 at 90k miles. Transmission can be clunky at times but no serious issues with it

We have a 2018 F150. Transmission when out. Glad we had the extra warranty. Only out $100 deductible.

Didn't they switch to a 10R60 in 2024 or was that just certain models? If I remember right it's a CDF drum sleeve that doesn't bed right and causes early failure. I have the 10R80 in my truck, 90k miles and it's been flawless.
