Would you go to an acquaintance’s comedy show?

I wouldn’t call this person friend, more friend of a friend, though I certainly know them, but no idea they were an amateur comic.

If they bomb I just don’t know how you can ever be around this person again, it’s up there with the most humiliating and lonely feeling in the world. If it’s good, this person is still just an acquaintance, if it’s horrible, I’ll never be able to look at them the same again. I just don’t think you can go in this situation.

If it’s an actual friend, you have to go support them whether they suck or not

He couldn’t possibly bomb worse than you have with this thread.

TF?! Baw, have you few drinks enjoy the company of the other friends that are going and I'm sure some of the people performing will be at least somewhat funny. If not oh well, you supported someone you know and who invited you to watch them perform. It's not that frickin serious.

Hell yeah.

Sounds fun and different.

I rarely go out. Its work and homework. Sometimes shooting pool with college friends.

Something different sounds cool if whiskey is involved.

Kudos for the people who try and karaoke. Just enjoying life

Being embarrassed by something another person does is weird.

I get terrible second hand embarrassment. Watching anyone bomb would make my skin crawl, much less someone I actually know

The comic may bomb but he’ll still be taller than you

You don’t have a friend, much less a friend of a friend.

I had a friend from LSU who became a moderately successful comedy actor who also wrote a humorous memoir. There were two stories in the book in which I was supposedly involved, and even used my real first name, and both were complete fiction. He used one of the stories in a standup show he did for a couple of months. I thought it was really cool to be a character in the material, even if none of it ever actually happened.

He hated standup because the crowds are brutal. Sometimes you just don’t hook them and it falls flat. He did that for less than a year and never did it again. Failing to win the audience in that situation isn’t a life failure. It’s just what happens.

For all that, I would go to the show. It might be funny, and no one may laugh. But I would definitely go. And it takes a lot more nerve to do than I have. So at least he’s trying to do something interesting.

What is wrong with you? Go and laugh at the person’s jokes. Talk to them after and tell them you’d never be able to get up in front of a crowd like that, etc. Say he must have had lots of improv classes because of how he seemed so natural. Ask where you can see him perform next.

Make the guy’s week.
