What is up with the celebs/ tv figures with ashes on their head

yes I know yesterday was Ash Wednesday but this seems to be the first year that I have seen like everyone in the media with it.
Also originally it was just sprinkled on the head so it was not a visible sign.
This all reminds me of Matthew 6: 16 - 18 as they are all hypocritical

quote:
16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

they're signaling that their radical leftist ideology will leave them in the ash heap of history

I am not Catholic, but I am 61 years old and have seen the symbolic ash cross on my friends' foreheads for as many of those years as I am able to remember. Certainly back into the 1960s.
Thinking back to my childhood, I seem to remember that my Latino friends often just had a smudge of ash, while my Anglo friends more often had the cross. I wonder if the Church has an actual policy on this or if it is just cultural.
I also remember thinking how unusual it was that my Catholic friends got up and went to church BEFORE SCHOOL one Wednesday per year.

I mean don't you get it? Catholicism is like the fake Christianity. It is what it is. It's a fake way to claim you have morals.

First time in last 5 years your house won't be raided because you are catholic, so people are more open about itt.

While Ashes are not technically fasting. There is a difference between having ashes on your forehead during a previously scheduled interview ie. Mark Rubio, and going out of your way to virtue signal that you are Catholic. You should be proud to be Catholic year round!

I've noticed it too. Maybe it's just coincidence.
The more cynical part of me thinks that it's an effort of media/celebrities to ride the vibe shift a little after a pretty long period of being more openly hostile toward traditional/religious values.

No fear of being cancelled for showing it
It’s a good thing. Don’t overthink it

If we define "originally" as being 1000-1500 years ago, the ashes were "originally" sprinkled on the head of males, but marked upon the forehead of females because they traditionally wore head coverings.

That was actually the Gospel read at Ash Wednesday mass.

It's a custom/tradition that became a formal activity about 1,000 years ago. While I don't see a problem with using ashes to signify repentance of sin (it's a practice that went back to the Old Testament), I don't personally like the use of "holy days" for formal religious observance and practice. The Scriptures give us one holy day--the Lord's Day--which is celebrated 52 times per year.

Went yesterday and wiped off ashes on the way out of the Church. And yes Mathew’s gospel is and was a Dichotomy.

There’s the possibility that the existence of President Trump has converted some people. They may believe he’s the antichrist.
Perhaps that’s a remote possibility, but it crossed my mind.

People on here do realize that there are Protestant denominations that do ashes on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday, too...right?

Heaven forbid you go to church more than you have to. Don’t go out of your way for the guy who died on the cross. It’s not like he went out of the way for you, right? We’re only talking eternal life here, so no big deal.

Don’t let the anti-Catholics know. They’re on a roll.
