Was in town today (BR/P'ville) and stopped by Rouses on Airline and Antioch to grab a king cake.
Got the pralines and cream for us and a plain cream cheese for some friends.

I have always been a Ralph's Supermarket KC fan but now firmly on the Rouses bandwagon.

Good news. This is the best "filled" king cake I've every had.

Bad news. Will be back in cenla where no place here makes a decent KC, and that includes Atwood's in Ellick.

Should be close enough to run to Laffy for a quick trip, grab a couple KC’s from Keller’s Bakery…

I’ll never understand how someone can claim a grocery store king cake, especially Rouses, is a good king cake as compared to a bakery like Randazzos. And I’m not talking the prepackaged Randazzos you buy in Baton Rouge. To each his own, but they are completely different.

Oak Point is definitely better than Rouses in the BR area.

Never had Rouses, but I had Poupart’s traditional two days ago and it’s by far the worst I’ve had. Hard icing and the sugar granules was 3/16 inches thick. Yes, I measured it. The reason I had was that this lady at the king cake section kept raving annd recommending it to me.

Maybe I’m wrong, but my favorite king cakes are the ones I can get at my local bakers. People fixate on the big name ones. But where I am in NELA, there’s 2-3 solid local bakeries that make superb king cakes. I’d hold them up to anyone.
I feel like anyone in Louisiana can look not too far and find a bakery pumping out fantastic king cakes. It’s not witch craft.

Kellers and Great Harvest are both really good. Crystal Weddings’ king cake is also legit.

It’s good, not great. Moist. Good icing content. Certainly a good value. Something I would bring home to the family on a weekday, but not to a party or friends house.

I’m taking Rouses over Randazzos 10/10. Rouses king cake is like a McDonald’s burger, it’s not the best by any means, but it’s always good enough in a pinch.

My local Rouses (22 in Mandeville) has the best bakery of any of the grocery stores in town. Fresh market and whole foods may look "fancier" but Rouses always tastes better

Ralph's Market king cakes are delicious. Not the prettiest but they are damn good.

I got a praline one at that Rouses last year. It was delicious. Gonna go get another one soon.

Shop at Rouses very often but haven’t had their KC this season. Last I recall, maybe last year, theirs was just okay not bad or great but we’ll give it a try and see.

Last year Rouses changed up their recipe or procedure in making King Cakes. They are so much better now than previous years.
