I live within 1 1/2 hours of the new Bois D Ark Lake in Texas, 45 minutes from Fork, 10 minutes from Lavon Lake.

I need a boat but don't want the expense for something I'm going to use 10-15 times a year, plus storage.

Are Kayaks too low to cast from, uncomfortable to sit in for hours, do boat people laugh at them.

If I get one it will have a trolling motor

I had a Wilderness Systems Ride135. Had a cheap fish/depth finder. I got a milk crate that I added some PVC to for storing rods and reels while paddling. I enjoyed it when I was younger, but my back has become somewhat problematic and I cannot sit in that position for long enough to enjoy it. You can find seats that elevate you a bit, but the higher you are off the kayak, the more unbalanced it becomes and the more wind affects you.

If you're trying to fish an area, and there is any wind, keeping the kayak in one spot while fishing is a bit difficult.

Obviously you're not going to cover as much ground as a boat, so you're sometime limited to a smaller range. But you can sometimes access areas boaters can't.

From my understanding, if you put a trolling motor on a kayak, you are technically required to have a boat registration number on it. Might look into that and confirm. You'd be at the game warden/ police officer's discretion if they're going to give you a hard time about that if that is the case.

If it weren't for my back, I'd do it again though. It was great exercise and you're on the water without the obligation of maintaning all that goes with a full on boat. And WGAF if boaters laugh at kayakers. If you're enjoying it, they can laugh all they want. And no, casting was never an issue from a kayak.

One of my sons ought a kayak from Bass Pro and it had some great features. It’s an Old Town Auto Pilot 136. Awesome but heavy.

I bought a kayak for fishing a couple years ago to fish a nearby lake that was undergoing repairs and put the ramps out of commission.

First day out I rounded into a cove and two other guys were in kayaks one leaning over and blowing the other guy. Turned around went home and have yet to put it back in the water.

I bought a Ocean Kayak Prowler 13 back in 2005 and still love using it. Kayaks have come a long ways since then, but it is still one of my favorite ways to fish. Any small rivers/creeks around? I prefer fishing in bayous or small rivers personally in them. There are some great forums for kayak fishing including one for Texas.

I just started kayak fishing last week man and I wish I had taken it up years ago.

Ok, so here are my answers. No, it's not too low to cast from and if you get the right kayak, you can safely stand and cast in them, but this will take some careful practice. You have to get used to it. Oh and I caught five decent bass yesterday fishing out of mine.

I've never given a single thought to what a "boat person" might think, so I really don't know.

And yes, you can get trolling motors and custom designed battery operated drives for them.

I've got a native propel 12.5, prop/pedal drive.

All the time. Just recently bought a new one.

-Not at all. Can cast just fine.
-Depends on the kayak seat. It also depends on the seats position. Higher seats will be more comfortable for longer.
-Never had anyone laugh at me or give me a hard time. Maybe they cursed me under their breath but people have always been respectful.

As already mentioned, you’ll have to register it. There are quite a few models out there specifically designed to accommodate motors. I recently bought the Native Titan X 12.5 Propel and it is designed for trolling motors, kayak motors, micro power polls, and electronics. It’s a little heavy to transport but that thing is super stable and comfortable on the water.

A lot of these kayaks can really get up there in price when you start rigging them out. So that’s something to consider beyond the base price.

I’ve got a 12.5 foot Native Slayer Propel and spent a lot of time fishing Ray Roberts. More than anything else, the stability of my kayak has made fishing feasible. I always look at the weather forecasts/Windfinder sites and launch and fish sheltered from the wind as much as possible.

I almost always fish standing up and sit down when I get a fish close to the kayak and net it. Get an anchor trolley and you’ll have more options when you fish. I use an old Hook 4 fishfinder and can still see some cool stuff.

Lavon would be a fun place to tie on a double slab rig and join the boat shows hauling in sandbass during a frenzy. The Texas Fishing Forum has a kayak message board and lots of people posting about Lavon, Ray Hubbard, etc.

Not at all. You can stand or sit. You can accessory the crap out of one if you want. On the extreme side you’ll see two screens mounted on the front. One side scan and the other live scope. Then you’ll have a motor mounted in the back or front. Or you can go basic and just rods life preserver and paddle.

There are 75 kayakers fishing a tournament in Leeville this morning. If big boat people have a problem with that, screw them.

Went to a Caddo Lake boat ramp a few months back, and they were having a kayak bass tournament with dozens of entries. There are organizations that operate multiple such tournaments, so kayak fishing is obviously quite popular.

All the time. Well, not as often as I’d like.

Not at all. I cast sitting all the time. I do tend to favor my spinning rods more that my baitcasters but that’s not a function of the kayak.

Naw never. Fun story I took mine up to Toledo a few years ago and was fishing the end of this cut. Bunch of boats crowded around throwing plastics into the grass line. There looked to be clean water on the other side, so I paddled across the grass into a little cut where the water got about 4 feet deep. Picked up two nice bass on the back side while those boaters watched me fish a place they couldn’t get to.

I fish a Bonafide SS127. Great rig that has a really comfortable seat that I can stand in with no problem. Has a removable pod that my battery and transducer is mounted to so all I have to to is take it out during transport. Like anything you’ll need to fish a few times to find your comfort zone and rig it out how you like it. Don’t have a trolling motor on mine, just spent a little extra a got a nice paddle.

I have an ascend 133x I picked up on sale for about $800 from baspro a few years ago. Comes in at 13.5 ft and a little over 100lbs with a open design and decent seat. It's great for lakes and some costal fishing. It comes pre wired for setting up a trolling motor and fish finder. I've seen some with small outboard attached also.

As far as size it's big enough to fit 2 small children easily and stable enough to stand and cast. If you really want more Info facebook has a couple of Louisiana based groups that do a lot.

I recently bought one off fb for cash. No paperwork. I added a motor. How do I go about registering that?
