Never been to DC or an inauguration where to stay, what to expect, suggestions?

There are many different inaugurations.

Congratulations!
The Willard Intercontinental is a favorite. Walkable to a lot of stuff. Awesome little bar/restaurant on the lower floor.
Never been in DC during an inauguration, but I'd say it will be hard as hell to get around, even on public transportation. Expect to walk. A lot.
The best ethnic food in the US is in DC. They have it all.

Skip the inauguration, go get in front of Trumps hotel and watch and listen to the ceremony on the big screen.
Trump will get out and walk a few hundred yards in front of the Old Post Hotel and if you are on the front row chances are you will get a handshake

Stay across the river in Crystal City or in Old Town near the Metro stop. Much easier transportation as getting around the District is tough on Inauguration Day. Metro is easy to use and the fastest way to get around. Purchase a pass or a Metro Card.
