What are the benefits of being a high-school teacher?

My son is an A student. He's very outgoing and in every organization in high school he can get in. He loves Ag and is VP of their FFA. He wants to be an Ag teacher. I think he's too smart for that and should go in engineering or something like that.
How do I talk him out of being a teacher?

Tell him to think about his most shite head classmates… those will be his students

Ask him what kind of car he wants and explain if he is a teacher then he can probably only afford some sort of Stellantis/Chrysler product

Tell him to get a degree in something and then spend a couple of industry and get a teaching certificate if he still wants to do its
Maybe push him toward something like an agribusiness degree to get the best of both worlds.

Let your kid live his own life. In the words of Mox “I don’t want your life”

Engineers are one of the most mistreated professions out there.
Teachers don’t make much money, but pensions, half the year off, and retiring stress free at 50 is attractive.

I get your sentiment but it seems like right now, more than ever, the country could use good teachers. So if your son is as smart as you say and he wants to teach, then let him do what he wants for a career.
Do you think teaching is beneath him or something?

You talk to him, tell him the cons and the pros, and let him make the decision.
I've had family members at every level of teaching and school administration. I've heard all the shite. When another family member who could have done anything she wanted said she wanted to be a teacher I put in a great effort to talk her out of it. It didn't work, and she graduated, applied for jobs, and got probably the best one she could get (in all aspects her "dream job"). She loves it, and by all accounts is an amazing teacher, one who all the new teachers are compared to.
If your son wants to be a teacher, and he knows the good and the bad, the challenges, etc......help him to be a teacher. Those are the ones who need to be in that line of work.

Based on my extensive research of reading the OT for many years, without a doubt, it’s getting the first crack at underage sexual targets that will 100% land you in prison.

My sister (no pics) was a top student but wanted to teach. The experience for her was horrible. She said the kids are awful and teachers cannot remove problem kids.

Ag teacher here. I started out in the classroom and taught social studies for 17 years. I was contemplating a career change and decided to become certified in ag. Best move I ever made and I wish I would have done it years ago. It is a lot less stress than a traditional classroom teacher and many parishes employ ag teachers as 12 month employees so the pay is way better. I teach in one of the poorest parishes in the state but with my years in the system, a few bonuses, some after school classes for four hours a week, and the way our parish factors our pay I made over 90k this past year. I absolutely love all the hands on curriculum I get to do with my students and being the kids actually enjoy the class, and want to be there, discipline is really a non issue. Louisiana is in desperate need of ag teachers and there is always 10-20 spots open every year and there will be more as the older ag teachers continue to retire. Your son could probably have his pick of jobs as there just aren’t many young people becoming ag teachers and the majority of the ones that are getting certified are females. People can say what they want but principals prefer to have a male presence in the ag department so your son would receive preferential treatment.

I get it's an honorable career, and he's very good at public speaking and I'm sure he'd be a great teacher, but I know he could do better.
Every parent just wants the best for their kids, and I'm no different. He's hard-headed like his mother so he'll do whatever he wants.

Also remind him about how much kids lie to their parents.
Why put your career in the hands of a bunch of immature liars and their Karen moms?

Making $60k while getting 3 months straight off during the summer. If there is a severe thunderstorm forecasted, they will probably close school, you don't have to go in and still get paid. Troubled student's recently divorced moms...
I could think up a few more probably.

Suggest he majors in the field he wants to teach in. Way more versatile than majoring in education.

Damn, we are up to 6 months off and retiring at 50? Someone needs to notify my state board to get on that.
