To me it sounds like they’re no dropping charges and just delaying the trial. The “out of abundance of caution” makes it seem like this is so the verdict isn’t thrown out or ruled as a mistrial in an appeal in case he claims he was insane or something. Curious for a lawyers take on what’s happening.

The fact that they dumped the car proves that they knew what the did was wrong.

It’s becoming very clear in this country as well as most Western countries that there are a lot of judges that need to take a ride to the train station

I don't know the legal system, but it sounds like he's going to a psychiatric hospital until he is fit to stand trial, not avoiding a trial all together.
