I hear this garbage all the time on this board.
I grew up a Tigers fan. I dicked around in high school and didn’t have the grades or money to go to LSU. About 3 of my best buddies did go and I went to their BR house all the time. Hung out, went to games, and lived it up. One of my buddies works for LSU now and hooks me up.

I say all of this because…. I was never a student or athlete at LSU. But I’ve been a fan for life and have deep ties to LSU.
Am I not worthy of being a fan?

Anyone who claims that only graduates can be a fan of a school is a raging douchebag.

I was never an LSU student... I didnt want to be an LSU student... I grew up on highland road and lived a few miles away from LSU... For college, I wanted to get out and go somewhere else... new experiences, new people, new city... After college I even worked for LSU

Gatekeeping fandom is a very strange and weird thing

Everyone in my family is a LSU graduate, I grew up 10 mins from campus going to every basketball, baseball and football home game in the 90s. I was accepted to LSU on two different occasions but went to ULL. I love the tigers and am a lifelong fan but I don’t wear Tiger gear or say we when talking about the tigers. I don’t shite on anyone about how or why they are a fan of any team. Enjoy how you like, but as for me I’m not comfortable being a representative of school I didn’t attend.

I had to leave La because I played soccer in college which LSU obviously doesn’t have. Otherwise, I would have gone had I stayed in state. Still an LSU fan…..

As a grad, I can say that being back on campus evokes emotions and memories that are more than just going out in tigerland or to Ivars or going to games. Obviously someone that didn’t go to school there won’t have those memories.

I have plenty of friends that didn’t go to LSU that are huge lsu fans. That’s totally cool. All I can say is that I think being on campus means more to me than it does to them. Doesn’t necessarily mean I’m a bigger fan

My dad came from a poor family, and college just wasn't in the cards for him. He left school early to help with the bills after my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer. He eventually went back to school and got a GED, and would go on to earn a very good living, providing for us a wonderful childhood.

Dad loved the Tigers until the day he died. He attended as many football and baseball games as he could, and on more than one occasion cheered until his lost his voice. The idea that my dad wasn't worthy of being a Tiger fan is ridiculous.

Are you really so insecure that you're asking this board for approval? If you asked LSU themselves, what do you think they'd say? Do you spend money on LSU items? Then YES, you're worthy to call yourself a true fan.

By the way, my grades sucked in high school too. I went to JR college for a year, and then the military paid for my degree from LSU. It's the United States. There's always a way to pay for college. "I couldn't afford it" isn't really an excuse nowadays.

Being a fan is what YOU get out of it. If watching LSU win championships thrills you then you are a fan - it doesn’t matter how you got there. Anyone who brings up the school thing is just trying to agitate someone, is entitled, is clueless or all of the above. Don’t let ‘em get to you.

Who gives a shite. Tiger Stadium would be half full at best if only those who graduated were allowed to go to games

You’re absolutely worthy of being a fan. The only time I draw a distinction is when non-alumni are bitching about things outside of the performance on the field: the school, the campus, athletes as students, etc.

If you’re a fan of the athletic teams and limit your commentary to that, I don’t think any rational person would give you shite about it.

And I mean “you” generally, obviously.

I doubt that. Though tickets would certainly be cheaper

There was a similar thread on the MSB the other day.

Don’t let (as of my reply) the current up/down vote to your original post fool you, most people don’t have a problem with “fans by choice” who grew up and continue to be fans of a school through thick and thin.

LSU is also a state supported school, and it represents the state.

I think where people have issue are “bandwagon” Bama fans in Laffy or New Orleans who joined because they are affiliated with ULL or Tulane and hate LSU. Or, you have the other group of “Bama football, Duke College BB, New England Patriot, New York Yankees, Boston Celtic” fans who just gravitate to successful franchises.

You’ll,figure out not to GAF what most people on here say. Live your life as you see fit and quit spending energy on others feelings.
