Europe pairs of cities for vacation

Went to London and Paris using Eurostar in between.
What other pairs of European cities would be good to visit for a few days each with a fast train connecting each?
Was thinking Zurich, Switzerland and Vienna, Austria.
What else?

All of Switzerland really. But Austria could be done with it too. Greatest trip you’ll ever have.

Florence and Venice
We have done this twice. My favorite vacation may be flying in to Florence, spending a week in the Tuscan countryside with a rental car, staying in Florence for three days and taking the train to Venice.

I've spent almost 7 weeks in Austria over 2 trips. Amazing country and extremely underrated. Pair vienna and Budapest imo

This is not a fast train connection. Munich or Salzburg is closer train travel to Vienna.
Austria is a beautiful country. I will be there soon for my 15th trip. I can't wait until I can spend more time there. But, my first thought for train travel is Italy. Rome, Florence, Venice, etc. are all fast connections.

Couldn't beat the connection between Barcelona and Madrid. Whizzing along at 190 mph!
Stop in Zaragoza along the way and visit the magnificent The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar.
We did Florence to Rome as well. Stopped off at one of our favorite cities in the world overnight. Orvieto!

Just did Santiago de Compostella to Ourense to Zamora to Madrid. 180mph train. One night each. Wanted to go to Barcelona but ran out of time.

There are several direct EC trains that go between Milan <> Zurich each day. I've done it a couple times. Super easy and only a few hours of your time.

Tons of options.
Some people can't imagine renting a car there, but there's so much to see in Europe outside of the major cities also. I really prefer that. Its like only seeing Texas by going to Dallas or only seeing America by going to NYC.

If you are a heavy sleeper there are also Night Trains that connect a lot of European cities that you wouldn't normally associate with being a train ride apart. Rent a private sleeper car for the price of a hotel room and wake up the next morning in a new city. It's a good way to save time on your vacation as transit it done while you sleep. But I would only recommend this if you sleep easy regardless of the conditions - it's brutal if you are awake all night.
Other than that my rule of thumb is to try to limit train rides to less than four hours and start early so you get a full day in the new city. Also look for open jaw airfares where you can fly into one city and out of the other.
Rome2Rio is a good website for comparing travel times, options and costs between two cities.

As you can see on this thread, there are tons of options. With that said, if I were pairing a second city with Vienna, it would probably be Prague. Truly amazing, underrated city.
