Would you trade Hawk and a 1st for Walker Kessler?

Right now it seems like anyone other than Kessler is out of our range since we have very little money. Utah of course will have to feel like they won the trade with Ainge running the show there. Kessler makes about $3 million so we can afford him. It’s obvious one first round pick won’t get it done even though that’s the honest value of the player. Ainge might line getting a pick plus a young shooter at guard off the bench where they can use some help. I personally would do the deal. If Ainge would, who knows? I’d give Hawk’s spot to Jordan Hall or Reeves if they would accept the trade. I just can’t see us actually going into the year with Theis as our starting center.

If Utah doesn’t want Podz would take him and Kessler for a first for Hawkins and other things to facilitate a Lauri trade

If that price is available:
The reason to do it is to get under the tax and remove desperation and needing specific things back in a BI trade.
The reason to not do it is if you can swing BI for a starting center at the deadline, Hawk and a 1st might be better to have on the roster than Kessler.
I need to see this "center" rotation fail before I make that kind of trade.

I get it but a player like Hawk can be had for a vet min. Kessler less so. It’s a better fit and allocation of roster spots IMO.
Guys out there that can be had for min - no particular order
Lonnie Walker
Svi Mykhailiuk
Landry Shamet
Wesley Matthews
Gordon Hayward
Justin Holiday
Evan Fournier

Yes. Haven't seen much from Hawkins that makes me think he's untouchable and our first Rd pick wouldn't be that good anyway.

What if Griffin fools us all, resigns Ingram to a lower deal, then trades Murphy?
He will justify it by saying he wanted to do right by Murphy, plus he gets to keep Ingram (his pet project). Murphy has as much value as Ingram, maybe a bit more (supposedly the Hawks offered the 1st pick for him). We can easily get Kessler for him, plus picks. We'd be under the tax too then.
I'm sure it would piss a lot of us off. But it tactically makes sense..

I’ll be honest, I’d like a center before camp. I don’t want to make a panic trade at the deadline to save the season and then have to try to figure out the center’s new role while we have 25 games to scramble for play in positioning.
Overpay for the center now. Get him in camp. Get him acclimated to the role and system and go chase a top 3 seed. Overpaying a bit is worth it if it makes us a contender out of the gate vs having to roll the dice at the deadline bc Our season is on the line, griff’s head is on the line and Willie’s head is on the line.

I bet they can get Capela for relatively cheap at the deadline if they really wanted to add another big.

So do I. I don’t want to play 60% of the year before we make a trade for a center at the all star break. Hawk has potential but I also wouldn’t blink to trade him if it got me the true rim protecting center we need AND saved us about $1.6 million.

If Danny ainge is dumb enough then yes

I will again remind everyone that we won 49 games last year, and one game was the difference from us being tied for 5th as opposed to in the play in. One game the year before would have had us tied for 7th instead of 9th, and playing at home in first play in as opposed to playing OKC in the elimination. If we go into the season without a starting center, it will likely cost us our season. We are not good enough to give games away.

We keep talking about the potential of Hawk but Kessler is less than a year older than him. Kessler still has plenty of time to improve and even in a down year this year was significantly better than Hawk.
Both of them already have an elite skill that is very valuable. Hawk can not only shoot but is a movement shooter and Kessler is an elite rim protector. But both have a major weaknesses. Hawk is a very bad defender and in today’s NBA Kessler can’t space the floor. But both are very young and have the chance to improve this so we have to ask: is it more likely that hawk can become a serviceable defender or that Kessler can become a serviceable floor spacer, even if it’s just like what Jonas was able to do.
Both are still pretty far away, so you also would have to ask: how good are they if they do not improve this skill? At this point in their careers, Kessler contributes more to winning even if we didn’t have a huge black hole at center. I also think he has a better chance at becoming a serviceable shooter than Hawk does at becoming a serviceable defender. So at this point I would definitely trade Hawk and a first (with some protection since we have a history of injuries) for Kessler.

We can't do that unless we're sending out a large salary. We're capped at about 7-8 million more than we currently have on the books and Capela makes 22 million.
The "best" trade for the team is making a Hawkins for Kessler swap.
Unless I'm missing some incentives or something, that would put us at around 100k below the tax. It puts you in a situation where you don't have to make a panic trade (I don't consider trading Hawkins plus a first a panic trade), and puts you in position to be a top 4 seed in the West barring some sort of injury.
Kessler
Zion
BI
Herb
DJ
Theis
Trey
CJ
Jose
IMO, that's a top 4 seed in the West if we're healthy. You have 3 good offensive options with 2 very good defenders out there in your starting lineup (not even counting DJ). You have firepower off of the bench with CJ and Trey, energy with Jose, and Theis if you need a backup big (or you can play some small ball for stretches too).
I would just bet that Ainge sees this too and is trying to milk us for everything that he can, because he's not in a rush due to not trying to win this season anyway.

Yeah I would do this.
It then allows you to not worry about the BI trade and if one comes up, it comes up.
You could focus on any players you want with it and not just have to worry about a Center.

I’m glad to see most are gravitating to this. It’s one that has been screaming at me for a long time now. For our side, it’s a no brainer homerun IMO.
I can’t pretend to know what the Jazz are thinking. But outside looking in, it just appears the Jazz and Walker really got crossed up about something. After a great rookie year, they moved him to the bench and then immediate trade rumors. I have this feeling they will deal him, and they won’t get two real first round picks. This is at least a general equivalent.

Yep, without a second thought.

Yep.
Between his skill set and cost, Kessler could be a second unit big if he needed to be IF we get a center in any BI trade. That is still worth assets to us given our bigs at the moment.
That gives us flexibility in what we can take back for BI.
