No one wants to host the Olympics

This is a video I found the other day. Seems relevant with the Olympics coming up.
Talks about how bids to host have been going down over the years. When the 2024 bid was being decided, there were only two cities looking for it: Paris and Los Angeles. The IOC was worried that there wouldn't be a bid for 2028 so they gave each city a host right then, awarding 2024 to Paris and 2028 to LA.
Some reasons for declining interest is the increasing cost of hosting the Olympics, going up to $25B or more, with other costs that aren't often factored in, making it even more expensive...
In many locations, they build massive facilities but they aren't used after the games are done - white elephant phenomenon...
It was thought for many years that hosting would produce an increase in tourism in the future and that has turned out to be false...
Seems to me that the US should be a permanent host. We have so many huge stadiums and arenas throughout the country that the white elephant is not going to be an issue. Host in Tennessee for example, do upgrades to Neyland and you can host soccer and other sports there and you know the stadium will continue to get used after the games are done. You would not have the expense of building a new stadium nor the burden of an unused stadium after the games. Same for locations close to Ann Arbor, Phoenix, Miami and many others. We are a big nation, we could split the Olympics up into regions, which takes the burden of having to host over 10k athletes / staff off the table. Often this means building an Olympic village which is a real problem.
Video says there are some people out there that have suggested a permanent site. We may as well be that site.

Didn’t watch video yet. I assumed above is why a place like LA would host: already have plenty facilities available

For decades I never understood why certain cities wanted to host the Olympics.
I sure as heck dont want my tax dollars going to a stadium that would only be used for a couple weeks.

LA is building no new facilities, just updated existing ones. It’s why softball and whitewater are in OKC.

As you stated, mainly related to the fact that the Olympics have been known to wreck havoc on the local economy and often promises made about the infrastructure improvements go either undone, half finished or abandoned immediately after the games.
There’s a ton of stadiums and structures out there that are already either defunt or tore down from recent Olympic events and the windfall of the Olympic revenue doesn’t out weigh the severe short and long term impacts to the region
The US being the sole host sounds like an awful idea as well. The solution should be to scale down the production entirely or follow through with the commitments of better infrastructure that is tied to improving to local areas infrastructure for anything, not just for the one time Olympic event

I guess they have till 2036 to figure it out…
Looks like plenty of interest for 2030 & 2034 Winter Olympics.
Salt Lake City
Stockholm
Switzerland
France

The Olympics became an extension of the larger geopolitical scene. It started with Berlin in 1936, into the Cold War, and continued after the fall of the the Soviet Union as the alliances were shuffled, and China emerged onto the scene.
The bid process became a huge grift by the IOC full of corruption. Tyrannical regimes with repressive or closed societies viewed hosting the Olympics as a public relations opportunity, smaller nations wanted the spotlight, and democracies valued the spectacle and huge crowds.
The political windfall from hosting doesn’t exist to that level any longer, and no one wants to deal with the IOC corruption, plus local political corruption that always surrounds hosting, or the headache and fallout.

Greece. Build the stadiums you need there. Staying in one place allows you to build something really nice

I worked for Harris County when there was involvement in the bid for the World Cup right at the very beginning like the very first phone conference with FIFA lawyers and the different government entities that might be hosting the event
and oh boy do I have stories everything u think u about FIFA is nearly the tip
The amount of money that taxpayers layout for the false claim on the type of real infrastructure that's created for the event
that might be built if it weren't for a World Cup or Olympics 100% falsehood
It's just an absolute money loser for the people at this point.]
I understand that at one point a country or city might make the bid for either because businesses wanted to advertise their city and get investments
but 24 hour 7 day a week new cycle the Internet it's just not worth it anymore if it ever was

Not true. I want to host it.

Did you suggest hosting the summer Olympics in Knoxville Tennessee?

Scaling down the Olympics would mean the end of the Olympics, IMO.
You could do the infrastructure things you mention if you split the Olympics into regions. As they add more sports, it has become untenable to create an Olympic village to host 10k people for a couple months. Split that up into regions and it's way easier.
Cycling and similar outdoor stuff in Colorado, big arena events in Miami, water sports in LA, stadium events in Phoenix, and so forth.

That idea is out there but Greece is in such dire straits financially, I don't know if it would go well. Also could be an issue if that region gets more volatile. Lot of people like the idea though because that's where it all started.

That thought has already shifted. Paris and LA are either using existing structures or just building temporary ones where needed that will come down after the games.

In before Bawcomville, La. as a host site

Just an example of a large stadium that already exists in the US, precluding the need to build something brand new that won't be used again. In 1996 they held some events on UGA's campus and Vince Dooley made the controversial move to cut down the hedges. He knew it would be a big deal for UGA fans so he took advantage of (or fabricated) the idea that the hedges had a parasitic disease or something. So I think they pulled out some healthy parts, put them in a secret location, grew them for a while, yanked out the hedges to accommodate the larger soccer field dimensions needed for the Olympics, then after the games they came back in and re-planted the new hedges. That's my recollection but some UGA fans may remember things more accurately.
The point is - it was a very small amount of money and logistics effort to use UGA's stadium for the Olympic events. With a typical Olympic budget, the types of upgrades that could be made would be impressive, with plenty of money to spare, needing less time, less disruption to the people around that area etc.
Neyland could be used if the Olympics were partially in Nashville, for example. They could never use Vandy's facilities because they can't figure out how to finish minor construction there.

True - and I found it interesting that despite that shift, the bids for 2024 still went from around 10 down to 2. Very surprising to me.

Scale it down to the events that were in the original Olympics.
Make Athens the permanent host.
Hold other events like soccer in the off years.

The US is the only country in the world that can host every Olympic games with ease.
No other nation, and its not even close, has the facilities in place to host especially Summer games in one city or region.
Hell, there's probably 15+ metro areas in the US that could host a summer games with almost no extra construction.
