Why do bands do encores?

It’s so scripted and fake. Everyone knows the gig. It’s just so predictable.
When they all pretend the concert is over and wave goodbye and leave, it’s kind of cringy.
Just play all the songs you want to play.

Back in the day the bands needed to go get a drink, take a piss, & do a line of coke.

Probably a piss break. They are up there for hours at a time.

1) Probably need a break.
2) It’s pretty much tradition at this point.

Hank Jr don't. Learned my lesson - when the last note of Family Tradition ends, you may as well be walking out cause the concert is over.

100% agree and have wondered the same.
What was the point of all of y’all walking off stage to walk back up literally 20-30 seconds later?

This is a good point and I have often wondered the same thing. Back when I was young I believed that the encore was dependent on the how hard you howled…if you didn’t want them to come back bad enough then they wouldn’t come and the show was just over. Not sure id that was really how it worked but that was the perception. Then at some point it all became scripted and is a bit silly now.

We went to a concert last month.
The band played their “last” song. They bowed and waved.
The front man said “hey, we all know the drill. No reason for us to go off stage just for you to cheer for us to come back. We have to get up early so we will just go on with the encore right now “
It was awesome.

I would rather have an encore as long as its not dependent upon the fans cheering enough to "earn" one. Let the band take a break, get a drink, take a piss, and then let's tear through another essential five songs and throw in a cover or rarity in that group. I need to piss, get another beer, etc too.

Completely agree. The only band I've seen that didn't do an encore was the RHCP and had so much more respect for them after that.
The whole crowd was just standing around waiting for like half an hour and they never came back out
.
I was like frick yeah.

Saw Buddy Guy this weekend. When it ended, that was it.
House lights came on, which is always the cue that the show is really over.

Steve Vai did something similar at a show. Basically said, look, this show sold out so fast, we added another sold out show later tonight. We're gonna skip the going off stage part, play our encore now so we can catch a break before the next performance.

I’m getting old. The break before the encore is when I grab my car keys and hit the exit. I had my fun. I’m sleepy.

I saw Fleetwood Mac several years ago in Atlanta. What I thought was impressive, at different points of the show a member would take a break. Except for Buckingham. He stayed out front the entire show and just shredded it. Made me appreciate his stamina even more. The encore was them going off for literally just a minute, then coming back to finish with Don’t Stop. Didn’t have to wait 3 or 4 minutes with all the wondering if they were coming back out. I have been to concerts where there was no encore and people were yelling for 5 minutes, then all of the sudden the house lights come on telling everyone to go home, lol.

This is exactly why dredg has always refused to do encores. It also totally exposes their casual fans at shows when they start calling for an encore.

Yea, anyone that has read the setlists or reviews from previous concerts knows whether there is an encore or not.

I always figured it was like the 2 minute warning to let people know we've only got a few to go.
Tyler Childers doesn't do encores, and knowing that helped me beat the crowd to the bathroom after his show.
Weird Al did an encore, but they never left the stage. The lights dimmed and he just leaned against an amp and started playing on his phone.

Is it really an encore or just another set?
