What do you all make of this story about Jaden suing UF for directly promising money and then never enrolling because the money never showed up? Is college football basically just the NFL now without agreed upon norms for payments and no cap salaries? Just ridiculous to me to see how out of hand this has gotten from “companies can sponsor players”… I miss old college football, can we just go back to 2019 when the world made sense?

ESPN article

quote:

Former University of Florida football recruit Jaden Rashada is suing coach Billy Napier, along with a big-time Gator booster and others, claiming they defrauded him out of millions of dollars by backing out of a promised $13.85 million agreement after the quarterback had turned down offers tied to other programs. The lawsuit filed Tuesday includes an allegation that Rashada signed his national letter of intent to Florida on Dec. 21, 2022, less than an hour after Napier promised the player's father a $1 million "partial payment" that day upon signing. Rashada never received the $1 million, and the boosters never fulfilled the deal, the lawsuit states.

quote:

"Sadly, unethical and illegal tactics like this are more and more commonplace in the Wild West that is today's college football landscape," the lawsuit states. "As the first scholar-athlete to take a stand against such egregious behavior by adults who should know better, Jaden seeks to hold Defendants accountable for their actions and to expose the unchecked abuse of power that they shamelessly wielded."

quote:

By signing with Florida, Rashada turned away from a prior commitment to the University of Miami and a promise there of $9.5 million, the lawsuit states, which is a portion of the damages Rashada is claiming. It alleges several counts pertaining to fraud, negligence and interference with a business contract.

He realizes he won’t make the League, and wants that payout. Entitlement runs heavy in my generation. 13 million dollars for a CFB player, who has never played a down of CFB?

It’s hilarious that the kid is literally directly benefiting from “the Wild West”. They are still acting like the athletes are the victims

Kinda hope he wins, honestly.

Big time college programs having to shell out 8 figures for players that never even suited up for them would be a great way to end this scam.

Maybe. Or he was offered $13 mil, has paperwork detailing the structure, was promised $1 mil as a signing bonus and got stiffed once UFs collective realized they severely overpriced the market or were intentionally deceitful all along. Don't know how he's the bad guy for accepting an outrageous deal he was offered. Many would.

I also read that he actually did receive $150,000 from Florida before switching to Arizona St.
Does/did he get to keep that money???

Edit: I’m seeing that this was sent from Florida to Rashada so he could pay back Miami boosters to avoid litigation. So Rashada still was up money given by teams at one point that never even got to use him.
Im definitely that guy who still doesnt understand a lick of how this all works.

The article said that he had received the $150k as a signing bonus with Miami, so when he committed to Florida they gave him that amount to pay back Miami and get out of the deal. No idea of Arizona offered anything. Doesn’t sound like it.

Or kids will stop chasing bait to the highest sketchy bidder. Sounds like he had a good thing at $9.5m in Miami, dropped them for a few million more, and ended up with $0. Cant say I feel sorry for him.

It's money not deserved anyway so screw him. He played the game and lost. He wouldn't be complaining if he turned out any good then he would be getting paid and then be deserving of the money. None of these high school recruits deserve the money being thrown around, it should be the producers on the field on college level, but that's sadly where we at.

Yep. Im still at a loss how this is a sustainable system. Im predicting there is going to be many more lawsuits like this over time.

What if players start losing them?

That could be wild. How many programs will promise money to get someone on the team, then never deliver? If there's no punishment for it, why pay?

So he got $300k. I wonder who paid the $75-100k in taxes.

Sounds like this is his problem, he won’t win this case. That’s what you get for being greedy

Sad part is I'm 99% sure this his parents doing, the kid might have wanted to move past this. Regardless they aren't going to win this case. Nobody wants to say it but alot of these parents are the problem.

Remember when rookie contracts were getting out of control? Like Russell’s was one of the last ridiculous ones before they implemented that rookie cap and started giving it to the vets. Something like that needs to happen. Just not sure how.
