to be fair, there was a general disgust at the government subsidies for electric cars in general and it wasn't aimed strictly at elon; he was just the most successful at it so there was a far greater share of the subsidy hitting him and his customers.

if you look back as far as elon launching rockets to mars with a tesla convertible welded to the side of it, his pot smoking interviews and the comments on this site, you'll find its more akin to scruffy's comment than not.

im not watching those women because they seem insufferable.

anyone who has read up on Elon knows he isnt a genius. He is simply a good businessman who was lucky enough to be born into wealth and had a lot of people along the way save his arse. He is the epitome of the clueless ceo who succeeds despite himself. His previous treatment of his employees and partners is pretty bad. i dont know if thats gotten better in more recent times.

he's a grade A troll though, i'll give him that. Can be funny as hell when he wants to be.

I am not going to dance around it and simply say your memory of those threads is incorrect. The vast majority of the time, almost to exclusivity, the mention of EV subsidies arose in threads discussing Tesla/Elon and it was actually the EV pumpers that would point out Tesla's subsidies had run out and it was the other manufacturers of EVs that were still collecting them. Subsidies were absolutely used as a sword against Elon and Tesla with very little discussion of other manufacturers except by the Tesla and Elon acolytes.
