I fly Spirit to Mexico and Colombia. Cheap cheap flights. Also I use a backpack larger than a standard backpack and never had an issue.
Hard to beat $150-200 rt to Cancun or $120 round trip to Vegas.
I prefer Spirit to Southwest. I hate the seating system on SWA.

I did have this problem before.
Canceled flight leg in Ft Lauderdale. Sprit did nothing. Also they only refund the ticket price but the taxes or extras. So I got $35 refund on a $100 ticket.(was a $200 rt flight to Cartagena)
Then I had to get a hotel, an overpriced Uber, and then pay $249 for a direct flight home on Southwest the next day. So the cancelation cost me a good bit.

Edit to add, this was out of New Orleans.
Just get there early.
I was supposed to fly out a few weeks ago on a trip. I didn't expect the security line and bag check in to be as long as it was. They closed the door a about minute before I arrived at the gate. I watched as the plane stayed on the ground for about 30 minutes more before leaving the gate. So my bag flew to my destination, I didn't and the next flight was not until a day and a half later, so I admitted defeat and cancelled my trip. It took about 2 days before my bag flew back.

I like the business model of Spirit. I don't usually care for the extras that with other airlines I'm paying for anyway. With Spirit I can choose what to pay for.

He may be slightly exaggerating, but his point has merit.
Air travel has declined overall since tickets have gotten relatively cheap.
Just a lot of trashy people in airports now.

I fly Spirit all the time (1-2x a month), and i can only recall my flught being delayed once or twice. The clientele is a little rough, but otherwise the planes are clean and no frills. Most importantly, they dont have reclining seats, which is great for me. (I usually work on my laptop on flights, and there is always an a**hole in front of me that wants to recline. HUGE pet peeve.)
I type this as Im sitting in an airport bc my American flight is delayed 3 hours. This makes 5 out of my last 5 flights on American being delayed. Thats a truly impressive record.
ETA: Spirit customer service is a completely story. If you cant make your flight or need to change, be prepared chalk up your loss and take the L.

That is certainly agreeable and maybe Southwest and United is what Spirit was 10 years ago but they are still quite different clienteles and will continue to be so as long as there is that price structure difference.

The biggest issue with Spirit is the delays. Other than that, never had an issue. You get what you pay for. If you’re an easy traveler then it’s a great option for direct flights.

I agree, generally, United > Southwest>Spirt.
Greyhound is probably somewhere in the middle.

The early direct flight too or from Cancun was nice. 2 hours and you are there
I flew them, MSY to Cancun, no problems.

Spirit needs to launch this as their new ad
"Sick of paying for premium cabin classes and upgraded fares for more room? Fly with us, in smaller seats where people can't recline their seats so it actually feels like the same amount of room if you ignore the uncomfortable seat itself."

Never had a problem with Spirit. Got me there and back. That’s all I need.

If you are flying direct early in the morning Spirit isn't too bad and is usually on time.
This. Flown Spirit around 10 times, always in the morning, and those initial flights were always on time. The connector was late every single time. Not to mention, the day before I was supposed to fly to Cabo, they said they didn't have enough pilots so they rebooked me on the next available flight, which was a full day later.

Couple years ago I had the last Spirit flight to MSY from DFW. It got cancelled and of course, there were no Spirit employees to talk to at the ticket counter to see about getting me on another flight home. Same for their 1-800 customer service line. So, I ubered over to Love Field and grabbed a SWA one way to MSY. Luckily I carried on my bag so no need to worry about luggage, but I don’t think I ever got a refund or voucher from Spirit. So, frick Spirit.

I did a round trip from Houston to Tampa years ago. Cheap flight and on time both directions.
Heard so many bad stories about cancellations I never tried it again.

She ain’t no Ryanair
I have flown Ryanair BUNCHES of times and it was NEVER as bad as US Budget airlines. The biggest issue is they fly out of older less convenient airports, or did in the mid 2000s. Most of the time we flew out of what they called Frankfurt....its actually Frankfurt Hahn and about 100 miles from Frankfurt. It was funny watching people rearranging their baggage to meet weight limits and the flight attendants spent the entirety of every flight trying hard to get passengers to but lottery tickets of apply for a credit card but if you did not check luggage and kept your carry on (personal item) within limits it was alright. They actually paid my Father and me a Pound to fly from Frankfurt to Shannon, RT, once....the airfare was listed as -1 pound....my credit card statement had a 2 pound credit on it when it came. Flew to London and Rome several times for a penny (1/100 th of a pound) from Frankfurt Hahn RT. Stanstead was the airport in London, about 2 hours from London and I forget the one in Rome but it wasn't much further than the one most people fly into.

Spirit is losing large amounts of money and hemorrhaging cash. On 5/6 they reported a 140 million dollar loss for q1 alone and a loss last fiscal year. Jet blue had planned to rescue them in a merger but it was called off, resulting in reports of possible bankruptcy. They have had a couple of operational melts. The FAA has hit them with fines for violating safety regulations.
careful when you choose this airline. Their business model doesn't really work.
