Wife wants me to look into this? Any insight? We can't afford Denver.

I went to college in nearby Lexington. Seems like a much better option to me. Small walkable downtown. College town. Very historic. Land prices still reasonable.

I've often thought that a great retirement gig would be to grow an apple orchard in the Shenandoah Valley and watch the apples turn red in the fall. And then not give a shite if anyone ever came to buy them or not.

I miss my time in Lexington

It’s a nice area with some things to do. Downtown can get a bit “college-y” but there’s a lot of history and a lot of things to do outdoors.

Place is overrun with leftists and illegals anyway. Roanoke is great. Take a look at north Georgia too. Beautiful year round and good country folk.

Those Appalachian area college towns seem like the perfect place to retire to me

I've started looking at medium size towns in the Appalachian corridor and Roanoke is one that has caught my eye.

It has a lot of the amenities you find in the Asheville area but at a discount and less infested with boomer retirees and gen z wfh hipsters.

Hopefully some baws with local knowledge chime in.

THIS. Denver is a cool place for active, young professionals… not for retirees. You get a nice 4 seasons with a mild winter in southern Appalachia. Cost of living is pretty cheap as well.

You would have a better quality of life in Denver.

No comparison.

How much are you saving when you're retired?

Denver is just too expensive. Been here since 03. We'll have around 3 mil.

You want to retire in the Roanoke VA hospital?

At least it’s new-ish.

Don’t know much about Roanoke but Denver is not a place I’d look to retire. If you are going to retire to CO pick a small mountain town not the big city.
