Yellowjackets are underrated

They are so ubiquitous as to be overlooked when people talk about animal stings and bites. For their size and sheer attitude, they have to be near the top. I shared a glove with one recently and it felt like I got popped by a nail gun. It’s not just the sting, but you’re sore for days. Mosquito’s, heat, humidity and Yellowjackets are just some of the reasons to love summer in the South.

I’m bummed they don’t run the triple option anymore.

They also tend to sting in groups. No bueno.

Mowing the yard and running over an underground yellowjacket nest is one of life's most miserable events.

Knock on wood, seen it but never felt it. Guy on the tractor, on the other hand...

I snuck out of church with a friend (preachers kid) once when I was about 8, stepped right on a nest. I suppose the congregation got quite the kick out of watching us dancing outside trying to chase those foul demons away.

Run over a nest of them while driving a tractor in the sweltering hot of summer. They will make you leave the tractor while it's still moving forward.

Ran over one last summer got tagged about 3 times before I knew what happened, ran to opposite end of the yard and those sumbitches still got me 2 more times.

Once left mine while in gear, still mowing, rendezvoused back with my tractor 10-20 seconds later further from the nest. Only got hit 2 or 3 times, but they were everywhere, almost instantaneously.

They seem to maintain a swarm no matter how fast you run, just manifest out of nowhere. I truly hated those things.
I could never pull for Ga Tech, I hate those things so much.

Yellowjackets are underrated
They're 2nd only to bumblebees. The definition of, "nightmare fuel hellscape" is running over a bumblebee nest in the ground and having them tear your arse up. Think carpenter bees, but with a stinger, living in the ground by the hundreds, though not as easily agitated as a yellowjacket.
They're like a quiet, dignified, former heavyweight boxer: they're not as easily pissed off as the loudmouth (i.e., the yellowjacket), but when you push him over the edge, you will regret it.
Ground nesting stinging insects is a sore subject for me, I digress.

Are hornets the same thing? What about those Japanese hornets?

My dad (RIP) did that when I was young, probably 10 or 11.
I've never seen run as fast as he did that day.

I was out with mom when I was a kid and she was watering flowers. She put the hose down and the water found a yellow jacket hole to their nest. We all got stung running all over the place.
Even the poor cat had a stinger in its nose.

Not underrated by me. One got me in the ankle as i was running away and felt like I got shot in the ankle. I went down rolled and popped up running like hell.
