I’m a psychiatrist and I must get 10 requests a month from patients to send them an emotional support animal letter. Seems to be the new fad this year and it’s about as annoying as people claiming that they have ADHD or are on the autism spectrum.. Your dog didn’t consent to becoming a golem for all of your projected angst, fear and avoidance. Am I the only one who sees this as an exploitative means of avoiding the uncomfortable emotions we need to confront in order to grow?

And I’m not referring to actual service animals who calm down vets having a flashback or bark when a girl has a seizure. I’m talking about the blue haired pansexual gen z er who has anxiety, a dog and a pissed off landlord who just discovered said dog.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who finds this trend asinine.

You really had to go here as opposed to just calling these people pussies?

Vet here that sees a lot of these “emotional support” dogs and most of them are as anxious and crazy as their owners. Especially since the pandemic and none of them were socialized.

Maybe they just need a doctor’s note to take the doggy into the grocery store.

They are trying to avoid getting denied an apartment lease or having to pay fees

It’s so they can have restricted breeds or just animals in general in a no pet rental situation.

From a person who has been in property management way too long.

It is amazing that only the breeds that aren’t allowed provide comfort.

Are these not adults? Why do they need to confront uncomfortable emotions? What in the hell does that even mean?

Wouldn't you have a written diagnosis for these cases? I have one child with Aspergers and he loves his cat. He does find security in it and it does serve as a therapeutic for him. I know we all laugh at the emotional support aspect of this but a genuine case on the spectrum is a bit different than your typical blue haired idiot. Don't just take their word for it that they are on the spectrum. As for the ADHD, they have no use for an animal. They should channel their energy into productive activities.

You can just buy a service dog jacket for your dog and nobody can say anything to you by law. Well that’s what the person I know who bought it on Amazon said….she brings it on planes and everything

A lot of people get these letters for their pets so that the place they rent allows them to have the dog

Emotional support animals

At my former office location I had a counseling/social worker office in the same building. One of the social workers, a guy, had a dog the size of a small horse that was always with him while wearing a "support animal" harness.

A "mental health" professional that obviously had his own mental issues.

Expected these days I guess.

I don't agree with your thesis. I've learned through hard experience that uncomfortable emotions are best suppressed.

If you’re not talking about service animals, then why not just concede that all pets are emotional support animals?

An exception might be guard dogs, but other than people buy them for emotional support, no?

Please elaborate here with your psychiatry background. I see this everywhere.
