Up to 75 pitches and 6 innings today. Seems like a lock for a June call up at this pace.

I hope this guy becomes a legend

Someone who knows more about this data than me can hopefully explain but Twitter says it’s pretty good.

Ive seen the pirates pitching this year..and he might already be their best pitcher.
Baseball is so weird that you have to spend a couple months of even years in the minor leagues to make it to the big leagues

Considering how trash the Pirates are when it comes to pitchers, maybe once he gets out of Pittsburgh

Him and Jared Jones could be an elite 1-2 in the next few years. Jones is very good although obviously still shows signs of rookie struggles. He’s got a 3.18 era and 0.91 whip with 42k in 34 innings thus far

I hate that he's in our division but looking forward to many epic showdowns with him on the mound between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh

Only 11 whiffs is the most surprising stat on that page haha

Most dudes aren’t Skenes

Correct. People like Langford get to the big leagues faster

And even a guy like Langford isn't lighting the league on fire. He’s been mediocre at best (I still think he becomes an every year all star). Being a rookie in the majors is tough no matter how talented you are. Lot of growing pains.

The guy needs to be in MLB. I don't know what the Pirates are doing. He has nothing left to prove in the minors. Fire the bullets with the big club.

They are trying to manipulate his service time, to gain another year of team control b

Trying to make sure he doesn't get to count this year as service time.
The new cba made it so the top 2 finishers in Rookie of the Year in each league count the year as service time.
If he got called up now that would be possible if he was dominant enough

quote:Service time aside, he’s thrown 23 minor league innings. He’s gone through a full lineup twice a total of 1 time. He’s not going to be called up to pitch an inning or two of relief every other day, he’s going to be called up as a starter. There’s no reason to rush him before until he’s at least closer to averaging 75 pitches a game (his minors high so far). He’ll be up by June

There’s also been a serious trend of power pitcher injuries and the Pirates aren’t going to be stupid about it. He’s 21 and the likely cornerstone of that franchise for a decade. They aren’t competing for a WS this year and will likely be out of the playoff picture early. Gradually easing him in with several more AAA outings, giving him his first taste of the majors over the summer, and shutting him down early fall is 100% what they should be doing

Wow you can tell sports aren’t going well at LSU by the amount of Skenes circle jerk threads.

It actually makes a ton of sense. The Pirates are a small market team and aren’t expect to contend this season. If he ends up winning rookie of the year, he’s going to get a full season of service time. If he goes down with a major arm injury early next year, they would have basically ended up wasting his three arbitration years by bringing him up too early. The Nationals waited until early June to bring up Strasburg and the Pirates should do the same to prevent Skenes from winning ROY and having that additional year of service time from kicking in.

The assumption of injuries, winning rookie of the year, etc. Goodness what an over complication. You play to win and a guy that can help you do so isn’t in the majors yet.
