Ask the judge about jury nullification.

The judge asked people who have a medical problem to raise their hand. I raised mine and he told me to come forward. He asked me my problem. I showed him the hearing aids that I wear and that I have great difficulty understanding all that is said in a large courtroom.

He excused me from jury duty.

When they get to the "habitual drunkard" part I just raise my hand.

I've always just let them know I believe in jury nullification. Haven't sat one yet in the 4 times I've been called.

My boss and mentor many years ago said " tell him that you are a drunkard and and gambler." Works every time.

Did your summons show up certified mail? No? Guess you never got it.

I saw judge Catherine Kimball send deputies out to find a woman who had been summoned but did not show. Deputies hauled her in about thirty minutes later with 4 small children in tow. When asked why she did not show she told the judge that she could not find a baby sitter for her 4 children. Judge told her “go find a baby sitter and be back within the hour. She did but the jury got seated before her name was called up for questioning.

This story reeks of small town hick bullshite.

I got as far as being called into the jury box with 11 other people to get questioned. Ended up not getting picked because 1. I was a patient of the Dr. Office that was getting sued and 2. All of my family works in the medical field.

The person who got let go the quickest said she knew on of the people involved in the lawsuit.

In La. just don’t register to vote. Almost all the parishes use voter registration as the list to select from. It’s not like voting is going to change anything except the faces.

This is bullshite. Every time I was called, when someone who had been summoned got called up for questioning and was not there the judge would issue a warrant for their arres

How can they prove I received the summons? I get other people's mail all the time. I haven't gone at least 4 times when summoned, nothing happens

I sure would hate to be judged by 12 people not smart enough to get out of jury duty.

I had never gotten called into jury duty and then last year got called in for county court and federal court within months. The county court was easy. They let you off for anything, even pre planned vacations. I had a work conflict and easily got off. Federal court was a whole bigger ball game. They were super strict and it was a lot harder to get off. Fun fact - I was in the jury pool for the synagogue shooter in Pittsburgh who killed 11 people. Never got selected but was shocked when the dude pled not guilty. It was creepy with him standing feet from us as we got sworn in before questioning.

I feel like I’m one of the few people that have always wanted to be called on for jury duty.

I had one time where I was called in but there ended up being some kind of system issue so they sent everyone home and we didn’t have to come back.

Feels like it would be a great experience

Not really.

The "right" to a jury trial is the one thing I think our FFs got wrong.

I don't believe that anything that requires someone else to be compelled to provide it can be a legitimate right, which is why I don't believe health care is a "right."

Now one way to solve that problem—and it would solve all kinds of other problems with our system at the same time—would be to start having professional juries.

Someone could become a professional juror by going through training similar to a paralegal—a couple of years worth of training at a community college, say.

They could learn basic legal and forensic concepts, which would mean that they would be more qualified than your average amateur jury member. They would also do nothing but sit on juries, so a lot of the legal posturing and smoke and mirrors that lawyers currently use wouldn't be nearly as effective on them. They would learn to disregard the show the lawyers put on and be able to focus on the substance of the evidence.

They could also have their voting records regularly reviewed to root out any evidence of bias.

Frankly, I think it's a no-brainer.

But returning to the original point, I don't recognize a jury trial as it currently stands—in which citizens are compelled by the state to participate—as a legitimate "right." I think it's a mistake.
