Yes, this is correct. First a car from one line, then the other and so on, regardless of who ordered first.
Nah, I'm not waiting on your peepaw taking 3 minutes to spit out his order. If your order is in first, you should go next.

I don't eat either place because I do not care for either place but my daughter loves her some chick fil a so I frequent it pretty regularly. Service has always been stellar but we have one close to the house that I avoid like the plague because for some reason its about like going to a Krystal...service is LOUSY. Its well known in our area, it doesn't do nearly as much business as another one about 5 miles away where service is stellar.
I forgot about how lousy it was recently and went through the drive through. 2 employees standing at the menu sign in the left hand lane, none in the other lane. Only car in site was me. I proceed to where they are standing and they ask me if I had ordered on the APP. I tell them no. They tell me I will have to get in the other lane. When I point out there is no one but me in the line and the line winds up the same place and that one of them will take my order when I am in the other lane they said that yes, all of that was true, but the lane I was in was only for orders from the app and I would have to get in the other lane. I proceed to the window and they have no idea what I am doing there...I tell them I would like to place an order. They ask me if the people at the menu side took my order and I told them no because I was in the wrong lane. They told me this was correct and that I would have to change lanes. When I pointed out at this point there was only one lane and I was in it and wasn't going to move until they took my order they had the manager come over and explain that I was in the wrong lane. When I asked what lane I should be in he had no choice but to tell me the lane I should be in was indeed the lane I was in since there was only one lane but that they could not take orders from the app lane or at the window and I would have to pull around. Still no one else in the line...no cars at all. I pointed this out and he agreed and actually said they weren't busy so If I would pull around into the lane I was supposed to be in they would take my order. I told him my truck had broke down and would not crank. He took my order, gave me my food and I drove away, still no one in line at all. For whatever reason this location has lousy service, does almost no business compared to most, is dirty and is always out of something on the menu. Its been there about 5 years and has always been that way. Its been remodeled at least once in 5 years. Why I have no idea but it did not change anything, still lousy service.

This isn’t general traffic where the zipper is the rule. This is Chick-fil-A. Whoever orders first, pulls up first. They asked for your name when you ordered, so there won’t be confusion at the end of the line.

It's a zipper - however, I always go in the outside lane because our CFA has "escape" lanes if they bring your food early. I am fine if someone wants to go in front of me because it gives me more time to get my food from a runner and take the escape portal.

This is the information that needs to be known. If it was just like a few seconds difference between "who ordered first" then I'd say the expectation is clearly a zipper merge.
If the old guy was waiting to pull up for like a minute or more (which seems doubtful, knowing how fast those lines usually move), then I would say the expectation would be for him to go first.

The one we go to has another attendant after the merger to confirm your name so the window has the right order.

What’s the proper etiquette here. It’s a zipper, right?
At Chick Fil A, no, it goes by who ordered first. Almost every CFA I have been to, the person that took your order will direct you to pull behind the car you are supposed to pull behind. You do not zipper. Some of the older ones that don't have the rain protection and crap have you acting like heathens.

i love it when the a-hole in the other lane doesn't let me in like they have to ride the bumper of the person in front of them, then i get my food before them and pull out and stare them down while going .01 mph and eating a fry.

Essentially. I don't know how you could pay attention to the order status of someone in the adjacent lane. Also, he could have started ordering first but if you completed faster then no reason to wait. They know the name and vehicle of who ordered what too.

Well, I'm under the assumption that I didn't need to say that the ordering had already taken place, you know, at the point where the two lines merge... well after the ordering spots. At least at the Chick Fil-A's in our area.

the reason i am not a fan of the “zipper method” is because it assumes people aren’t selfish assholes. when 9/10 they are.

A chick fil a customer cussed you?

Anti-CFA people are like vegans, if you're in a room for 90 seconds with them they'll find a way to tell you

I just received a thorough cussing from a gentleman in the other lane because I proceeded to pull from the two lane to one lane like a zipper. One side goes then the other.
He was adamant that he should go first because he ordered first in his lane with the attendant like it’s done at McDonald’s.
What’s the proper etiquette here. It’s a zipper, right?
Of course, leaving open the possibility I’m the a-hole and have been wrong for years.
Its fast food, who cares

Sonic has WAY better burgers than Chick Fil A

I don't understand. Y'all ordered in different lanes? How was it determined that he "ordered first" (like, was it clearly much sooner?) and how would you jump in front of him if so? If you moved behind the car that came out of his lane, I would guess it would be your "turn" to go. I would also guess it's all basically a wash time-wise, so it seems like a stupid thing for anyone to get upset about either way.
Yes, a lot of CFAs have two Drive Thru lanes side by side, with people outside taking your order in each. They then merge to one lane past that. They have people outside at the pickup window who are giving it to each car. The attendants at checkout have entered your car info and name so they know which is which.
And the answer is Zipper. How the hell do you know if the other guy ordered first?

Because CFA lines move quickly. He would have been pulled forward past the order area already. It’s not that hard to tell when there is like 2 cars there.

If Chick Fil A were a religion it would definitely be Mormon.
