I’ve got a lot on my plate managing multiple projects so I can’t really escape all of my responsibilities. I could, but I chose not to, because answering a few emails or texts doesn’t kill me and I’d rather not have a ton to catch up on when I get back to the office.

This is poor planning by both your co-worker and their mgmt.

I've been a Tech manager for many years and have always forced my teams to get prepared for when someone is on vacation.

There are a few people in a Tech org, however, that do have the keys to the kingdom (admins, security priniciples, etc.). These folks have to keep their laptop with them at all times, just the nature of their job. Andy they are highly compensated for it. But, it's not like we bombard them with requests. It's only in a SHTF situation, which rarely ever happens. I can count on one hand how many times I've reached out to someone on their vacation in 25 years.

Be an exceptional teammate and help your co-worker plan better for next time. They will appreciate it.

I had a supervisor many years ago that wanted me and a few others to come in to finish some orders that needed to get out since we were backed up and OT got cut out. Dude legit said "Can't pay you, just come in and work for free...I am". I legit laughed and just said "No, thanks".

I then was told I wasn't a "team player". No one but him came in. He also didn't get paid.

There are people on this board who agree with this though. And will tell you that you NEED to do unpaid work to "prove" that you're a team player and deserve a promotion over people who don't.

If that's your jam, cool. If that's what it takes to get a promotion then I don't want it. I value my time with my family too much to get pulled away for work, much less unpaid work. My employer understands that and I do what's expected. If you have the agreement with your job that your compensation demands near 24/7 availability, by all means do it if that's what you like. It's not for me.

They called me CFO but large financial decisions were ultimately ownership calls so I called myself controller

Depends on the trip. If I truly don’t want to be bothered, I’m going to go somewhere where I won’t be readily available anyway and tell everyone that on the front end.

Otherwise, I’m still available by text and phone.

Yeah you know, making sure processes are in place to keep people and vendors paid, collect debts, etc. No big deal

unless you suck at controlling, all of that can be sorted before you leave and delegated accordingly.

So in a position that is going to be largely rare for most people in this forum discussing this topic.

I will respond to email/texts at night while in bed. If I'm on vacation for more than two days, I will also bring my laptop with me in case something comes up. It usually doesn't. What I do is fairly easy and stress free. I also rarely work a full 40, so I have no problem doing a little bit when I'm off.

Yeah, if I’m doing something where work correspondence is really bothering me or taking away from my good time, I’ll ignore it. Even then, a simple “I’ll take a look when I get back to the office” is good enough.

Not an issue for me now. In previous jobs if I was doing an hour or more of work it was not a vacation day in terms of PTO. Only exception is unless it was due to me not meeting a deadline.

The company or my boss’ lack of planning is not my problem.

Are you under the impression that this is exclusive to CFOs?

So can every job that does not involve an immediate threat to someone's safety, and even in that case someone is usually delegated to be in charge. You think things don't come out of the blue with company finances? Teach someone else to handle it.

If you work for commission, be good enough when you're there that taking a couple weeks off a year won't have your family starving

I am under the impression that most people work under some type of management. Or in a cohort. In which if they have good work systems can cover when a coworker is out on vacation.

ETA: Most of the people here are describing work situations where, unless it's a major emergency, they should be able to take their vacation in peace.

not everyone works in a "team" under a "manager" at a corporation or government agency.

no one else in my company does my job and that's not very unique.
