Zion’s defensive effort is growing each game.

I think it’s 100% due to him feeling finally confident in his health. He was tenacious at Duke. His conditioning is better, but also he is racing towards his first playoff series. Exciting times. He’s been given so much shite, hell it would be hard for me to be in the right mindset too when you’re first few seasons have been absolutely derailed. I think he’s there y’all.

Seeing him dive for that loose ball was both encouraging and terrifying. Effort was incredible.

I also think him obviously going full tilt helped to get the rest of the squad to do the same. There were a lot of tipped balls and dudes hitting the deck tonight

No clue the reason, but he's clearly trying more than he ever has, and not just trying but being good defensively and making a ton of effort plays.

The fact that he isn’t huffing and sweating 5 minutes into the game anymore probably helps. I still don’t think he’s 100% back to where he was in December of 22, but this is as close as I’ve seen since

Yes you do. Hustling is easier when gravity loosens its grip on you.

I actually think he's better. This version of Zion is playing better defense than the 22 version. This is playoffs ready Zion.

Defense is definitely better than December 22 Zion, but the offense is not yet quite as good.

The good news is that means Zion still has another level that he can reach in the rest of the season.

Did you hear his interview with Jen after the game? Dude really wants to win. He was emphatic about it and seemed very sincere. I think the talking heads in the media really lit a fire under his previously chunky arse. That blowout loss to the Lakers for that useless mid season tournament victory may be a major blessing in the long run.

Short and to the point

I definitely scoffed all the times earlier in the season and previous seasons where he talked about how he lives for this competitive stuff while giving zero effort on defense or really any time he didn't have the ball.

But now he's true to those words. It's max effort at all times. If he keeps giving this effort consistently, that's a top 10 player in the NBA.

His lateral movement is night and day from earlier this season. He shuffled his feet, stayed in front of Khwai and locked him up

His reputation in college was high motor. You usually don't just go from high motor player to low motor player or vice versa. You either have it or you don't for the most part. It's obviously the conditioning, and now that he's back in shape, his motor is back too.

This

I feel like he almost never moved how feet to beat a dude to the spot off the dribble almost all season, shite, all last season.

All of a sudden, he now beats that dude to the shot more often than not every game.

He’s been fantastic the last month. Did it take Stephen A to call him fat for motivation? Seems like that was the turning point?

Slow down brother, Z was making crazy clutch defensive plays jumping passing lanes abd blocking shots in clutch moments last season pre injury. I don't know if one is better than another, just as long as he's on the floor and in shape he's a good defensive player.

Last season before he got hurt, Herb was Herb but Zion was on a stretch where he was the best defender on the floor for a few games in a row. Game against PHX, MIN, both against Philly all in that stretch. He had defensive plays late in each game though they didn't win all of them.

something definitely clicked, not sure what, but even in the game against sixers or raptors, can't remember, his effort stood out and not even on the offensive end. game 63 maybe.

That's the first time i noticed a change. When he plays both sides of the court, we have the opportunity to play small lineups for more shooting.
