Here’s a great workaround the Louisiana inspection requirements. Go online and register your vehicle with South Dakota. South Dakota does not require inspections and they are an open state registration, meaning they do not require you to live there to register your vehicle. The registration process can be done 100% online.

I’m petitioning the South Dakota government to create an LSU license plate for all of us baws.

Fun fact, expatriots who are moving to Mexico do this because South Dakota doesn’t require you to carry US insurance. All other states require the car to have US insurance even if you’re in Mexico.

Or I could just not get one & wait for someone to actually pull me over which is doubtful

So if you rear end someone because youre texting there they just trust that you will pay for their vehicle damage and medical claims out of pocket on good faith?

That seems whack

You can only get a Brake Tag in Orleans Parish. Otherwise it is a state inspection sticker. Brake tags were required in New Orleans long before state inspections were. So, it's strictly a New Orleans requirement.

Good luck with that.

The citation you receive from not complying will be enough to cover a decade’s worth of brake tags.

Plus the time you spend navigating the DMV for compliance will take more time than you would ultimately spend just going get the inspections done.

But you do you baw.

How bad is your car that you can't pass inspection? It is 15 minutes at Bennys.

So you're going to have a South Dakota plate while you're living in Louisiana?

If you live in Louisiana, doesn't Louisiana require your car to be registered in Louisiana within 30 days?

LA Rev Stat § 47:501 requires a resident to register his vehicle in the parish of his residence if he will operate it on the roads of louisiana. there are tax haven states where many people title their high end cars and motor homes. DMV and state police are aware that a Montana tag on Ferrari hanging around Baton Rouge means the owner is a La. resident trying to commit sales tax fraud.

Montana does not have sales tax, inspection stickers, or front plates. A lot of high end cars are registered there for these reasons.

You're still just gambling that you dont get caught as residing in LA with a vehicle registered in another state after a certain period of time can also incur a fine.

Just dont get the inspection, or, ya know, get your car in compliance and pay the nominal fee

OP, as soon as you get pulled over for something else and they realize you are a Louisiana resident and your car isn't registered in louisiana you are gonna have to pay a lot more

Your "solution" seems like a lot of hassle just to save 18 bucks a year.

Don’t know why Louisiana can’t just add $10 a year to your registration. They would bring in more money because every registered vehicle would have this added to registration. Far less people using temporary tags than ones that have expired inspection stickers. Last year, I went to get one for my truck, they were out of the month stickers because they never received them from the state. Had to wait till the following month before my local place got current stickers.

I could go through all that... or, just take five minutes every two years out of my life to get one..
