Dune Part 2 does not live up to the hype.

I was hearing it was a top 3 sci fi film ever..I saw someone in another thread calling it on par with Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back...Laughable. It was visually gorgeous and the sound design was incredible, it should win both, but the scattered clapping in the sold out theater did not feel as if I just watched one of the greatest sci fi films ever.
Fury Road was the last one I went to that I remember the audience having a visceral response.
ETA: No chemistry between Zendaya and Chalamet

I enjoyed it a lot. A whole lot.
But the hype was greatly overblown.
Good to very very good movie but nowhere near the best scifi movie in the last whatever years. I’d rather watch Interstellar, Fury Road, Gravity, Arrival, or BR2049.

For sure. But there will always be those so in love with a certain book or sci-fi world that they are susceptible to wish-casting a movie based on that world into something far greater than it actually is in reality. This is one of those scenarios.

I’m seeing it tomorrow (or technically today), but Villeneuve is one those directors where there was something about his style that appealed to me, even before I realized all those films were by the same director. I had this same convo with a friend the other day, who didn’t know which films he directed, and had the same realization when I started listing them.

Agreed. I had seen Arrival, Sicario, BR2049, Enemies, Prisoners, and Dune 1 before I realized it was all the same guy.

It was mostly boring but the ending was good. Timothee Chalamet and Austin Butler had really good performances. Overall I still say the Lynch version is better in just about every way but the Villeneuve movies have their merits.

Ending was super meh.

I thought it was a good, not great film. There was a lot going on and a lot of it wasn't fleshed out enough.

Zendaya
Easily the worst part of the movie.
The dozen or so scenes of her just staring with her stupid face were annoying.
But it was still a great movie.
I prefer the first one but I really enjoyed this one as well.

I haven’t read a single word of the books and it was very possibly my favorite movie of the last decade. It 100% lived up to the hype from where I was sitting.
It’s okay that some people just have different opinions than you. You don’t need to explain away those opinions as wish-casting just because they don’t conform perfectly to your perspective. Frankly, that’s a rather odd mental state to default to

Despite not really buying TC as being a badass, I thought it was one of the best scifi movies ive ever seen

Doesn't get you emotionally. There's no pull or tug. I mean, in LOTR, we start identifying with Frodo or feel for him and Sam. Paul, we really don't in this movie. He's not a bad actor. I liked him in The King. It's more the scriptwriting than anything.

I don't think we are supposed to.

It was really good, but I enjoyed Dune part 1 significantly more. Oscar Isaac in particular was missed.
Hot take: the first 1/2 to 2/3 of Lynch's Dune was just as good. It just fell apart after Paul joined the fremen. The special effects hold up, including the sandworms. Sting as Feyd >> Austin Butler as Feyd and I'm not kidding.

This. Still a great movie but I actually prefer a lot of Denis’s other films and certainly prefer T2, Empire and Aliens over it. But it’s still a banger.
Like I said before, having a third movie so the second could focus on fleshing things out would have been *chefs kiss

They added nothing to the film.

Couldn’t agree more. And I’m a big fan of his. I’m also just drawn more to a Tarantino style where the dialogue is everything. There’s something just as enticing as a well written scene as an amazing image

I would have rather seen a much longer version of the sardoukar vs Freeman battle.
Also it's been 50 years but didn't Paul only try to convert a tiny arse drop of water and wear in a coma for weeks? What was this reverse sleeping beauty crap with Zendaya they stuck in the film?

I agree. Reviewers comparing this to Empire Strikes Back and a new standard for sci-fi films got me pretty hyped up. I think years of shitty movies has lowered the bar a lot.
Very good movie that I would watch again. But I didn't walk out of the movie feeling amazed. Would say it is in the same tier as Fury Road, Blade Runner 2049, Dred.
