Its always funny when liberals point this out and say how shitty and uneducated the blackest states are.

I learned something recently that really ticked me off. So when they look at these numbers they typically judge off standardized test. So here in Louisiana we make all students....all students even those with no intrest in college nor taking of any test..yet they make all students take the ACT and they look at all the scores of those college bound and not.
However, other states are smart enough to not make those with no intrest in college take a standaridized tests. So only those with the best scores are those taking the test and those that are counted on the state average.
We have really dumb kids in LA as do other high ranking states but because we force them to take these test we see our average tank...and now LA is at the bottom of the list.
ETA: we also pay our teachers table scraps compared to other states.

in that case, not having a bookstore in rural towns seems to be a show of competence.
as far as education in the south goes, there are many reasons, but let's not pretend that "northern" states are an endless sea of efficient, high-functioning school systems. mississippi is a shining southern example of a markedly improved education system. with school choice it'd be even better.
take out Jackson and the delta and they'd jump up the list even more.

This isn’t true. All public school students are required to take the standardized tests- LEAP & whatever other ones are out there. The ACT is not a standardized test.

The simple answer is demographics, take a look at some "urban" cities and see where their education and school systems rank.

Everyone keeps pointing to demographics but I think the bigger indicator is household income.

Yeah, that’s the reason. Because schools up North never let kids out early.
Private schools in the South are on par with private schools everywhere else in the US. The difference is in public schools and, regardless of where it’s located, US public schools are far below most European countries

That’s true, but not as relevant as it used to be. Right now, I think the biggest problem is that parents don’t prioritize education for their kids.

Your schools ability to win a state title and what that event does for school culture is more important than any single day of class or any single test.
I would argue their priorities are absolutely correct.

It's a throwback to more agrarian days when producing on the farm was more important than book learnin'. There were always some who recognized the importance of education but many were just trying to survive and needed those kids as farm hands because they could not afford to pay anybody.

They've done studies on it. While white southerners do score slightly lower than white northerners, most of the gap is in the minority scores.
Another example you can look at it is New Jersey. New Jersey generally scores in the top 5 nationally, Newark (which 90%+ black and latino) is one of the worst districts in the country. And keep in mind the school funding gap myth, urban majority minority districts actually get more funding per pupil because of federal money and state Robin Hood programs. So yes, the students are poorer, but they are getting more per pupil funding.
