Picked back up on EP1 last night and I can't get youtube tv to not dub it over. It's absolutely driving me nuts. I guess I'm going to have to sign up for Hulu again just so I can watch it without the dub. Going to message customer support today to see if it can be fixed

Do you they still use the same voices from the 80s?

I can see why it’s rated so high with the liberals within the first 30 minutes
1. Men portrayed as untrustworthy brutes
2. White men are evil and conniving
3. Christians are portrayed as silly
4. The cross is stomped on
5. A woman put a man in his place
6. Really late term abortion
Just waiting on the gay scene

My only issue so far. It is like they filmed half the scenes in portrait mode, just randomly blurring things on the borders, but it doesn't always stay blurred. Very distracting.
First two episodes were great though.
As to the language, it is pretty easy. Anything that is not japanese so far, they've had the characters speaking english, regardless of what language they are actually speaking. Not sure why that was hard to grasp.

How can you be this miserable Everyone is enjoying the show, not just liberals. You just go through life looking for reasons to be pissed off.

Some people are just easily triggered.

It has been very true to the novel that was published in 1975.
1. Men portrayed as untrustworthy brutes--many nobles of this era betrayed one another as they tried to gain power; the samurai were often very brutish.
2. The seafaring white men of this era were often evil and conniving in their pursuit of riches at the expense of native peoples--just take a look at what was actually done in South America and China.
3. Christians are portrayed as silly--this is just wrong; the Japanese converts to Christianity are portrayed as courageous and devout; the Christian Europeans are also seen as being very devout if a bit fanatical.
4. The cross is stomped on--Blackthorne was trying to show the conflict and hatred between the Catholics and Protestants to show that the Portugese had an ulterior motive when claiming the Dutch were pirates that should be killed.
5. A woman put a man in his place--are you talking about Mariko chastising the husband concerning the killing of the baby because that is straight out of the book.
6. Really late term abortion--straight out of the book and hardly woke.

come on man...
i'm right wing AF, but there was nothing wrong with the depiction here. it stuck to the source material,
some white catholics were honorable, some white catholics were dishonorable, some japanese were honorable, some were dishonorable.
Mariko was a central character in the book. some women were more than wives, some were just wives in the background.
the late term abortion was brutal, but in a culture where honor is everything, it was the sacrifice offered.
when they introduce a black gay character, sure, let's talk.

Ok, I watched the first 2 episodes, a couple observations here:
It does seem quite well-made. Pacing seems a bit different than the original miniseries, as Anjin has already gone to prison and back; and they had the attempted assassination already. There was more story telling in the original.
Blackthorne was very indignant about the death of his sailor in the original, he seemed to shrug it off in this one.
It's darker than the original... as in the filming is less well-lit in places.
I'm going on record here saying the original "looked better" in a lot of ways; but this isn't bad.
I do think the casting of the various Japanese might be better here, as I like Ishido and Yabu better in this version. Not as sold on the Europeans; Blackthorne is ok, and the Franciscan monk is about equal. I liked the old Rodriguez better, as well as the old priest and captain of the Black Ship.

this is an annoying trend with high definition cameras.
If you have a super nice TV you can see darker lit scenes but if you don’t you can’t see shite.
There was a whole episode of GOT I could barely see

That episode was meant to be dark so they could cut budget I’m pretty sure.
I know it gets hate but it’s one of my favorite episodes.

And just to reinforce-
the new series seems very good, I'm enjoying it and will continue to watch.
But the original stands up great. I saw someone in a thread mention something about "effects"; it's Medieval Japan . There ARE no effects that would be outdated by modern CGI. It's scenery, costumes, swordplay and archery, and acting. All of which were top notch in the original.
The original's assassination attempt was better, in my opinion. That at least had a couple different weapons employed, throwing stars etc. In this, you have 1 woman with a knife, cutting a bunch of people's carotids.
I also liked the handling of seppuku better in the original.

Holy shite, just watched the 2 episodes. Absolutely incredible, but most people won't even realize how badass it is unless they understand what was going on with Catholics and Protestants during that time period.
If you want some entertaining background on that, read Ken Follett's "Kingsbridge" series.
I promise it will make this series even better, and you will also be more knowledgeable about "V for Vendetta".

I've watched the first two episodes twice! I am so hooked, this is great television. I have never read the book so I went out and purchased it this weekend as well and am looking forward to it!

The book was one of my all time most enjoyable reads. Could not put it down despite the length. On par with Red Storm Rising and Lord of the Rings in scope and brilliance. It must have been an inspiration for George RR Martin's GoTs.
