That's what it felt like. I think maybe they wanted Hardy but got this guy instead. He's still good, though.

I thought he was forgiven in the “embarrassment scene”? So the generals “what’s done is done” was not a let it pass moment?

I thought about this. But if they kept this standard up the show would be almost entirely and Japanese or Portuguese. The Japanese obviously all speak their language to each other, and use Portuguese to try to speak to Blackthorne or any other westerner since he’s fluent in that. I never thought about that when reading the book but technically there’d be very little English spoken so I guess the choice was to make almost all the Portuguese conversations English.

This is what I have deducted. Every time you hear English it’s actually Portuguese, except I guess when Blackthorne is speaking to his men?

I watched it on Hulu last night. With subtitles.

I read the book back in the late 80s. fricking loved it.

I watched the miniseries back then and thought it was good.

So far this version is knocking it out of the park.
