Why is the Japanese Portuguese translator speaking English and not Portuguese?

To give the illiterates that can’t handle subtitles a breather

But I don’t think it is correct. Blackthornes crew can’t speak Portuguese. So what the hell is he speaking to them?

Guys it's not that complicated. All the European languages (Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese) are being spoken in English.

I imagine the showrunners didn't want to have the viewers watch subtitles throughout the entire show.

I mean, that by definition is complicated Every time English is spoken it can be any language in the world besides Japanese. Makes it hard to understand context to me

I love the show BTW

Joaquim de Almeida was cool as Father Dominguez, here's hoping he got to keep his head and might pop back up

I made it 3/4ths of the way before tapping out.

I love the subject matter and visuals but not the execution. Dialogue with subtitles, and score got tiresome quickly for me.

i will watch it, it looks worlds better than anything else made for TV in the last 10 years

i was a huge fan of the original TV series, and so far, i dont see PC wokeness in this

but having to read subtitles is beyond frustrating and makes it far less enjoyable when i need reading glasses to watch TV

On Hulu, (At least on mine) I have an option to watch an English dubbed version of the show. I prefer the subtitled version myself, but to each his own.

You have him speaking English to a Spaniard while in Japan talking about the Portuguese

What language is that?

And there is 0% chance you knew it was Dutch being spoken to start the show and. They were speaking in English on the ship

It was pretty obvious what they were doing the first time they asked if you speak Portuguese and then the conversation proceeded in English.

That made it obvious the opening scenes were actually in Dutch?

That was the confusing part. The show started off with everyone speaking English. No possible way no know that was supposed to be Dutch at that point. Especially when in the next English speaking scene it clearly is meant as Portuguese.

Have to agree. If that’s how the whole series is going to flow, it’s going to be an amazing ride. I vaguely know the story but they seem to be staying very faithful from my memory.

I am entirely immersed in this series in the middle of some meddling ones (Halo and Death and other Details)

I'm almost 100% positive there's a comment about them being Dutch within the first 5 minutes of the opening scene.

Dear God, I hope you didn't watch Black Sails and think every single one of those pirates spoke English in real life. For your sake, I hope you're just trolling for no reason because if not....woof.

I mean, ok?

So you were confused for the first 5 minutes of a 10 hour show? It's pretty clear what they're doing though so you should be good to go for the remaining 9 hours and 55 minutes worth of it.

Yeh, I said I really like the show. I only stayed it was confusing at first with multiple languages all being represented by English within a 20 minute span

The fish eye effect overlay thing is incredibly distracting to me
