If you have to ask either of those questions, Barbour is not for you.

Can we just have ONE thing that signals privileged WASP? I swear you liberals have to take everything.

Not overrated, they are incredibly well made and functional. Mine has lasted a decade so the investment seems worth it.

No, I have 4 of them.

My heaviest one that I wear during Northeast winters is on winter #10. I think I paid a bit over $500 for it in Nov 2014. I’ve paid for re-waxing once (~$85) and got some repairs done two years ago (~$125). Jacket still looks and works great.

Their jackets are the type that can be repaired at the fray points and are only look cooler as they wear age.

On a similar note, Filson (which is kind of US Barbour) is my go to for duffel bags and brief cases.

No and no if you can afford it, people see my Barbour and automatically know that I am an OT baller. In all seriousness, it's one of the best/warmest jackets I've ever bought. Had it for 5 years and still in great shape.

Absolutely love mine. Buy it, get the removable liner and hood, and it will serve most any purpose for many years. Needs to be rewaxed every few years, and that is around $75. Mine has sprung a leak, so I have to send it off to be rewaxed when the season is over.

Barbour makes products that you have to commit to in order to get the value out of them. If you buy jackets every years and don't wear old ones but a season or two they tend to be a poor value. If you have every intention of wearing it for 15 years or more that is where they shine.

High-quality products in a classic design are good values if you use them enough. Barbour jackets probably increase in value the higher latitude you reside in.

absolutely not, regarding the heavy waxed canvas cloth clothing.

neither is Filson.

I play in the woods and work in them. I've got one of each that no other brands could come close to in terms of durability and warmth/wind cutting ability, and classic style for work or dress. a well-worn waxed canvas Barbour or Filson jacket is a beautiful, practical, rugged and attractive jacket. they're old friends, and their smell hits you like the feeling of a cold north wind.

you're not just paying for the material, the hardware is superior. yeah, the jacket is $400, but it will go to your children with a little maintenance and upkeep. mine are family heirlooms. try that in a sitka small town.

No and No.

To clarify, I do not consider Barbour coats to be overrated as they are fantastic wet weather /hunting coats and for what you get they are not overpriced.

They make sense in rainy areas with moderate climates. Like the UK. They don’t breathe, and you’ll want to layer if it’s colder. Barbour will always repair any wear or damage, I’ve got one that is mostly repair panels at this point. It looks cool.

They will last the rest of your life if taken care of properly and you will have a grandkid wear it one day also.

I've got an Ashby. Only complaint is I got it when I was 50 lbs lighter and was between sizes. I opted for the smaller size since I'm rarely layering up for weather in Houston. Now I could use the size up. It's been 5 years and only had to re-wax once
