Pet Gila monster bites Colorado man, who dies in what experts call a 'rare event' - KSL News
quote:
LAKEWOOD, Colo. — The Jefferson County coroner has confirmed that a 34-year-old Colorado man died this month, days after being bitten by one of his two pet Gila monsters.
"I think this case highlights that any venomous animals should be respected," said Dr. Nick Brandehoff, a medical toxicologist and expert in reptile bites with the Asclepius Snakebite Foundation, who was consulted on the Lakewood Gila monster case.
Gila monsters are venomous reptiles found in the southwestern United States. While their bites can be painful, they are normally not fatal to humans. Experts say that the last report of a human dying from a Gila monster bite was in 1930.

Had one by my back door two nights in a row when my dog was a puppy. It’s illegal to kill them so for legal purposes I will stop this story right here. Nasty little things that hiss at you before they bite.

there's a 100% chance that the man had a pony tail.

Fun fact: The study of the gila monster venom lead to the development of GLP-1 medications like Monjourno and Ozempic.

Eng and Raufman studied powdered Gila monster venom ordered from the Miami Serpentarium, whose owner survived 172 snake bites over the years as he produced venom for research.
Eng isolated a small peptide that he called Exendin-4, which they found was similar to human GLP-1.
Eng then tested his new peptide on diabetic mice and found something intriguing: It not only reduced blood glucose, it did so for hours. If the same effect were to be observed in humans, it could be the key to turning GLP-1 into a meaningful advance in diabetes treatment, not just a seasickness simulator in an IV bag.

I've spent too much of my life piddling around in deserts.
Don't frick with any animal that lives in those shithole deserts. They're out in BFE for a reason.

I let my kid have a bearded dragon, that’s about as far as I’ll go. They don’t bite. Pretty cute little sucker actually.
Bearded Dragons actually have venom too, but they say it’s in such a small amount that at most it would just cause an itch similar to a mosquito bite.

Ward’s girlfriend reportedly told officers they bought Winston at a reptile exhibition in Denver in October and Potato from a breeder in Arizona in November, according to the animal control officer’s report. Told that Gila monsters were illegal in Lakewood, the woman told officers she wanted them out of her house as soon as possible, the report said. Officers working with the Colorado Department of Natural Resources sent the lizards to Reptile Gardens outside Rapid City, South Dakota. Twenty-six spiders of different species also were taken from the home to a nearby animal shelter.
Took, the spiders to an animal shelter…WTF

I'm all for personal freedoms, but there should be a list of animals that people are not allowed to own. Venomous snakes, big cats, Gila Monsters, etc.
