$50 minimum wage?

In a debate Monday night, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) defended her previous advocacy for a $50 minimum wage.
“In the Bay Area, I believe it was the United Way that came out with a report that very recently $127,000 for a family of four is just barely enough to get by,” Lee said. “Another survey very recently: $104,000. For a family of one, barely enough to get by low income because of the affordability crisis.”
A wage of $50 an hour would total $104,000 over the course of a year.
“Just do the math. Of course we have national minimum wages that we need to raise to a living wage,” Lee said. “We’re talking about $20, $25 – fine. But I have got to be focused on what California needs and what the affordability factor is when we calculate this wage.”
Republican Steve Garvey said he was not in favor of changing the minimum wage.
“Again, minimum wage is where it is and should be,” Garvey said. “If you look at what California has done to fast food franchises right now, increasing the minimum wage to $20. Then what’s going to happen? That’s going to increase costs for hard-working Californians to go to a franchise.”
At a previous debate in January, Porter suggested the minimum wage should be around $20 at the national level and $25 in California.

In California, I'm all for this. Would make it $65 though, with mandatory health insurance and a carbon-free employee transportation provision. And also, free childcare. The quicker California makes their suicide official the better.

All of this is a moot discussion anyway. The goal of all of these officials is to create an illegal immigrant work force that they can exploit for votes.
There's some nefarious shite going on.

A Big Mac meal is now $18 in some parts of the country, so it would be far more than $30.

Minimum wage-minimum skill jobs are not designed to support a family. They are starter jobs for teenagers and young people. Then you get experience and skills and get raises and move up or get a higher-paying job or go to college.
When I made $100 a week as a veterinary assistant in 1981 when I was 16, I didn’t expect to get married and raise a family on that. I worked 45 hours a week in the summer and about 15 a week during school (cleaned kennels at 5 a.m. before school). It was gas money, date money and pocket money and I had $2000 in the bank, equivalent to $7k today. I was intubating and doing anesthesia on cats and dogs, castrating horses and worming cattle at 17 years old (it’s probably illegal now but I did it). I got a raise to $125/week the next year before I left for college. Was glad to get it.

This is what happens when you have professional politicians who have never made payroll. She has no idea how many businesses this would bankrupt. News flash, Barbs, not everyone has a money press like the FedGov.

Problem-solving is not in the Dems wheelhouse. Policies that raise wages artificially make the problem worse. Barbara Lee probably knows that but will act like she doesn't. Obviously, they need to implement policies that lower cost for all.
